Its not bad, visually there are better games in the Trek universe. Playability from what I have seen so far is ok but nothing ground breaking. The on land bits a very much like City of Heroes / Villains

really let down by this!
managed to get a beta key and a fast download mirror on friday, played as much as i could on saturday before removing it again.
its just not as fast paced as i would hoped, i know people are saying the ground combat doesnt compare to the ship combat - and they are right BUT the ship combat isnt anything special - the only satisfied feeling i got was warping back to earth when a Borg cube arives and Deffeningly loud over the speaker it yells "WE ARE BORG, RESISTANCE IS FUTILE" then a number of star ships in the area started to attack, wearing their shields down while keeping tabs on your own etc
but further down the line - it just feels like it Mothers you EVERY step of the way.
to go from A to B hit the big red 'Holy s***' button to warp STRAIGHT there ect.
saturday night i removed it and got back on Warcraft

I still strongly believe they are milking this for everything they can get. It's SO anticipated, that no matter what it's like as a game, people will buy it... and they know it!
What is it, 2 weeks before release? They game is buggy as hell, laggy as hell, static, repetitive, has crap ground combat, has pretty boring space combat... I could go on. I know it's beta, but it's only 2 weeks before release, they won't be able to fix any of this apart from maybe a few of the bigger bugs.
And the lifetime access, lol, what a joke. You can ONLY get it between now and release and not after? That to me screams alarm bells of "we just want as much money as possible for this game now, and we'll probably forget about it after release" because people will think it's crap coz it's in beta, but no-one will buy a lifetime sub after release when they know it's crap for real.
yeah i got the same sort of alarm when i saw the lifetime package.
even though i just rid myself of it im quite upset it didnt live upto the hype, the potential for such a franchise on an MMO is untold but that offering was far from the mark! the most fun i had was making my Character that looked JUST like me (even the warhawk haircut!)

Yeah, the state it is currently in so close to release is not to good at all. It needs a major overhaul on so many levels. Think I will go back to LOTRO or may even go with WoW
to be honest, you have to bear in mind it's lagging (and the 'cannot connect issues') is/are being caused by every n00b and his dog logging on with their free Beta codes...I'm hopeful that when it comes to full release and we see the subs being charged, the Devs manage to get the server issues sorted, along with some of the bugs.
I'm also pretty sure as far as the combat is concerned (space and ground), that features have been trimmed for the Beta, with improvement and community growth, this will improve.
I don't remember way back when, but for those of you on WOW, how was that at the very beginning compared to how it is now?
i hear what your saying but WoW is a bad example - back in Vanilla wow it was 100 times better than it is now, today everyone is mothered just like in Trek to accommodate the masses rather than the core - but with the expansion they are hoping to change that (in WoW).
every MMO beta i have had the luxury of testing was damn near as close as release as possible with regards to play - granted that lag, bugs and glitches were minimized but the game play didnt change so drastic enough to make it totally different - if that was the case then you arent really playing a Beta - you're not testing the product they are putting on the shelves.

WoW was actually a bit of a mess, with disconnects, lag and a serious lack of stuff to do after the lower levels. No worse than STO is at present. Granted, Cryptic's track record is not quite that of Blizzard's though!
Not around too often!
but what im SAYING is the content is the same (was the same) the gameplay, style of play, areas etc - you take into account in ALL MMO's that at a new level there isnt much variability so you try to push gameplay, scenery, items and skills as much as you can - you could still instance group at low level which already defines the style of play of a class and such - i just dont see it in STO, and its not like i played a few hours and got bored, even into open space i wasnt gripped - its just very simplistic

I would say a lot of MMORPGs are repetitive. Go here, kill x amount of y, complete. I think the problem here is that you don't gain much by leveling. Therefore, you get int a set strategy early on, and you're stuck with it until the next rank. You get 3 skills to use per combat (one for each BO) and that's pretty much it. I guess it might be a bit different when you can get specific ships (Escort, Science, Cruiser), but even then, there won't be any change it tactics until you hit the next rank and get a new ship. However, I have found out that you can actually have all 3 types of ships regardless of what your character is, so that might give a little bit a variation.

i found it buggy like when I went into ground missions I was sill in my ship vice versa but I know this will be fixed, didnt find the game exciting as the missions are easy and kind of boring. I might give it another go but TBH I find it unlikely I will purchase this game.

ahh, no.. I wasn't trying to draw comparisons, I was genuinely curious as to how WOW was back in the vanilla days. I've tried WOW and I just couldn't get into it, not because of it's playability, probably more because of it's setting? But then I know some people who have literally had their lives sapped dry by it.
I don't think STO will be the defining MMO Cryptic had hoped/projected it to be. I think their use of the Beta term was misplaced, I'd say this little preamble they've currently got going is more of a demo than a Beta.
Perhaps STO won't be the addictive sort of MMO the likes of WOW and dare I say EVE? but I can see it having a pretty big following, not least from the diehard trekkies (sic). I am slightly concerned at the current push on subscriptions though!
From what I recall WoW beta was not very laggy, the only problems were with the activation servers as they were getting hammered. I also don't recall it being that buggy, to the extent that STO is. Although I may be looking through rose tinted glasses having been a WoW player for..... too long!![]()
You can see what cryptic wanted to do with it but never really pushed it hard enough, I was looking forward to this game since its announcement and was luckly enough to be in both the open and closed beta for it. Give it about 3 months after release and they should have most of the major bugs gone and the people seeing what its like would have left by then.
