    Post-VEF...

Have any of you given any thought to what happens when Starshoy moves on with his life and drops VEF. What then? VEF is Starshoy's. It is a one man show with the exception of invisible Valera. Why do you think he developed, expanded, managed, pulled his hair out, troubleshot, etc VEF? Out of the goodness of his heart so that we could enjoy a flight sim online? I don't think so. Hell, he states he doesn't even fly VEF. He is an entrepreneur who saw an opportunity and took it. Just open up your FB, select campaign, set your parameters, and then fly. It is VEF. Starshoy has incorporated VEF into Oleg's FB. That to me is immpressive. I believe that since it has made it to the CD is why he spends less and less time administering to VEF. He also is heavily involved in future projects with Oleg hence the trip to LA.
With his absence has come frustrations. Talk of creating an admin group. Problems in missions and with rules that go unresolved. Etc., etc., etc.

Perhaps with all the talent that lays in this diverse community of pilots, we should look at something new ourselves. Why could we not develope and have a similar online campaign? I think it is time to look into it myself. We have the skills, tools, and people to make it happen. When a one man show quits, dies, leaves, moves on, the show ends. I know that there are way too many of you parasites/junkies to want to see that happen.

For those of you who attempt to portray my thread as a rebellion or being devisive towards VEF are barking up the wrong tree. I admire what Starshoy has done. I respect his business capabilities. I have and will continue to enjoy VEF for as long as it is available. I just know from first hand experience that nothing lasts forever and would like to be in step with the changes when it happens. Those of you who have flown CFS1 know what I am talking about. Great game for it's time, was sad to see it end when Forgotten Battles came out.

It is possible to create another online entity that incorporates all of the good things from VEF, VOW, Forgotten War's, etc. We just need to act is all. If not, then when the day comes that VEF is no more is the day when severe withdrawl set's in. We have all experienced different degrees of it. For some, it almost requires hospitalization, right Beda san?

We have the people and talent to do this.

Post your comments and ideas and let's see if this is viable. Lets put our heads together and come up with an alternative to VEF.

    far reaching thoughts there....

    My £0.02

No body can really CHARGE for a service like this, because its STILL gonna be buggy, but once people have to PAY to be ploughed on the tarmac etc...before a restart 3 times, it's doomed tofail.

    Therefore it must be voluntary....

    and therefore it must, oneday.....die

Its central to my online life...I have NEVER been such a part of an online life...not even with Ultima Online where me and Deckard whiled away what felt like a lifetime....this is far deeper....

when it goes....I'll be gutted...but it MIGHT make us do as the bloke says and CREATE a new thing....

I'm not clever enough to for see it tho

I'm 99% sure that i could do VEF replication, i've got the skills to do it i'm sure but there is no way in the world that i could, because of the time needed to do it, the lack of money back from doing it etc.

Building something like VEF is something that would take over your life, and quite frankly thats why starshoy imo has left, he had enough. He wanted a life back...

I would say that Hexus and VEF hosting are in line with each other, I've got no idea what david makes on advertising and the tie ups, but you'd need to do the same with VEF to even cope with the hosting costs...

Its a pipe dream imo, some people don't realise what a project of this scale involves.....

And there in lies the truth.....one that even Starshoy probably didnt even realise

I talk to David about Hexus weekly and I know what it does to him.....it is 24/7/52

    no escape....ever.

The loss of VEF to my personal life would be ....horrendous

I believe the following would be a good business plan tho....someone might read it.

Create Software that is charged out to a Squadron.....£100 per year say. That can be shared by the entire squadron...one payment once per year to the owner tho per squad.

    The software is hyperlobby compatible.

Hyper lobby get 1% of the dough.
Oleg Maddox gets 5% of the dough.

Squad members get a recognised tag (like now) and can fly on servers run by people with an account too.....as per now.

Once per month you have one day downtime, when the squad get a chance to upload all the info......and the map then moves....not quite as dynamic as now.

50 missions per month, and they are chosen randomly.

I typed this for 10 minutes and now it looks like a load of rubbish.....but its going up anyway

imo subscription wouldn't work tho, not enough people/squadrons to play it...
You put off those casual users who want to play for free etc.

You've got to remember this sort of bandwidth COSTS A LOT of money. because its upload bandwidth you need to pay for. people download from you, so you need upload. Thats just the first stumbling block....

I have neither the skills nor the time, but I guess the sensible route to take in setting up an enterprise such that which Luke suggests would for it be run and administered by a group, rather than one individual. There are of course rivals to VEF out there. Forgotten Skies is one!

If any of you are thinking of this seriously, maybe it's worth thinking to the future a little and the the release of the BoB game, rather than building something for a game which though brilliant (and still awaiting that Pacific add-on) will almost certainly be superceeded by another warbird sim within a couple of years. Maybe that's what Starshoy is up to right now?

of course they can charge for it...

Its just up to people whether they want to pay or not

If he were going to charge for it.... then I would suggest the level of reliability and service should increase

Hmmm, charging people who can't afford something better than a 48k connection might be extremelly difficult. I would say impossible.
Don't forget that VEF and such wars are big hits because of the huge participation. If somebody asked for money then it would go from 500 (let's say for exmple) users to only 20-50...
And if it is to be such a small tournament then it's easier to make online campaigns such as BoE offers.

I think Starshoy is rather busy with the Pacific Fighters campaigns, AEP patches and BoE patches. Plus the fact he was at E3 last week plus the fact he is a bit hacked off with some of the VEF players behavious in the forums. Not suprised he has better things to do.

I really dont think a payed for model will work. If it does it has got to be 100% quality and will involve a heck of a lot of work. Dont think bandwidth would actually be that much of an issue, the games are hosted by the players themselves and I cannot see that forums. web site or even HL is consuming mega amounts of bandwidth

time for a view from a VEF outsider.......

I've taken part in ( as has TiG ) an online game ( Planetarion ) that used to be free, but went pay to play... it was never the same again. I know that hosting isn't for free ( it never is when I've sold it to my clients, so why would I expect anyone to get it ! )

Pay to Play can be the kill or cure situ and its never an easy choice to make

well tbh it's all gone to hell atm and I couldn;t really care less if I never flew again... although tomorrow when i'm soberererer I'll probably be just as eager/stupid to sit in a HL slot for 3 hours listening to people drone on about how there better be 110's or they aint flying...

For goodness sake 3-4 hours hanging around to play a VEF game. Is it that important? Fly some coops, get BoE as a squad and do some campaigns in there. I believe Aces has dynamic Eastern Front campaigns - use some of those. Got to make more sense!
