    Messerschmitt 163B "Komet"

omg.. they've fixed the bug with this thing on the ground now..... how'd ya like 30,000m altitude in about a minute, and only 500m down-range???

really, ya can't steer it on the deck so you just open the throttle up... gets to take off in about an eyeblink... shed the gear.... point it UP and it keeps accelerating..... what a plane...

I'll have a look around m8 - I saw it on the World at War series on TV - this thing is sitting there with a small plume of smoke at the rear, then ....its gone, takeoff and vertical climb in about 4 seconds, cameraman couldn't find it after that.

The sheer balls it must have taken to fly that thing, like being strapped to a SAM

Landing - now that was interesting, if the landing was overly harsh, it would rupture the fuel tanks and the highly corrosive fuel vapour would dissolve the pilot...

    ...literally

didn't they have upward firing cannon too on some of them? controlled by optical sensors... you just flew underneath a B-17 and the shadow would set the guns off and rip the arse out of the bomber while you flew underneath at a gazillion miles an hour... scary stuff...

    Yeah 'Schrage Musik' (Jazz Music)

Vertically firing 20 / 30mm guns, fitted to nightfighters mostly, but also trialed on the Komet - problem is the Komet was so fast it just couldn't achieve an accurate hit.

They had more success against the Lancs with them mounted in Ju88s and Bf110s

They also tried it with mini rockets and photo eletric cells, but they found that things like cloud shadows would set them off.

Interesting fact: The Komet had a glide coefficient similar to a high performance glider... even by todays standards!

If there was any trace of the highly volatile rocket fuels left in the Komet's two fuel tanks during landing, however, the plane would explode. In fact, estimates suggest that 80 per cent of all Me 163 losses resulted from such explosions on takeoff or landing. In the end, the Germans ran out of fuel and pilots to fly such an unpredictable aircraft.

Aye I heard some n00b pilots were too low when they ditched the gear, which would then bounce back up into the bottom of the plane...

Needless to say that prolly hurt a tad...
