Sound problems
I've just installed a new sound card - a Creative Audigy 2ZS.
Forgotten Battles sounds great through it - incredible engine sounds. But there are a few problems I can't seem to iron out.
Firstly an echo on all the sound, but it's especially bad with the microphone.
Secondly, and more annoyingly, a slowing down of framerates - especially at the start of a game (resulting in me being autokicked when online).
Anyone have any ideas how to resolve these issues? I'm using a Plantronics headset at the moment.

Have a fiddle with the sound extension settings switch in the FB sound options.
Also, try changing the sound quality and number of channels being used.
For the echoey thing, make sure your sound enviroment within the Audigy control panel is set to 'none' or whatever it is nowadays.
(I used to have a SB Gamer and you could set the basic sound enviroment for that... spent ages trying to figure out why everything was echoing to then find one of the kids had fiddled and set 'Cave' as my default enviroment)
One last thing... just check that your card is set as the default sound input and output, it could be relaying sound picked up from the speakers from another source (such as web cam with built in mike... you have NO IDEA how long it took me to suss that one..)
Oh yeah... and turn of the native voice comms for FB too.
AND... (sorry, keep thinking of things) if you're using voice activated comms rather than PTT, either switch to PTT or lower the noise threshold...

ooh yeah... one more thing... iirc, there was in issue with SB cards and ping times... not sure how long ago but it was a known issue and either a patch came out for the card or some sort of work-around was published.
I've just spent 4 hours watching Return of the King, so I'm too damn tired to go off and find the link, but serach here, on Netwings or on IL FB forums and I'm sure it'll turn it up.

I was having that... the noise was unbearable if there was anyone else on a server.... I opened up the IL2 setup program and set me sound to windows 2000 safe directx settings. no drop in quality & clean sound again.

thanks deckard - i'll try all this
-
tumble - that's sorted the echo. Thanks! :)
i'm not sure about the online autokicking/framerate issue. I'll have to try it out later
-
does it need that patch again...the .dll replacement?
-
I've still got the autokick problem. Very annoying. Anyone got any ideas?

More RAM maybe? A faster broadband.
Here's the system as it stands.
Gforce 3 (cheers Zak)
Creative Audigy 2ZS
768 RAM
Pentium 4
Broadband NTL 128 ( the slowest one anyway)

It's still screwed :( :(
I tried reinstalling the latest driver updates for the card, and reinstalling directX. If anything this made things worse. Now teamspeak is really quiet when I speak.
Searching on the internet I see that compatability with TS and game freezes are a common problem with this card. Some genius must have written the code huh?
I'm getting bad system crashes too.
There doesn't appear to be an IRQ conflict, which was Harpoons suggestion.
It has been suggested that one of the things screwing up the online play is a lack of GART drivers? Something to do with AGP? Some guy on the Ubi forums said this.
It looks like I'll be offline everything but DF servers for a while :( :(

The diconnect problem in co-op games seems to be resolved. It was something to do with my graphics drivers/chipset drivers. I reinstalled the chipset drivers, then uninstalled the graphic drivers and reinstalled an earlier version of them, then installed the latest version. Problem fixed.
However the teamspeak soundcard issue is getting worse. It seems to be a problem with the Audigy card and TS. I'm going to try reinstalling TS to see if that works.
Anyway it was great to do a couple of VWFs last night, even though I couldn't talk to anyone and got shot down both times! :D:D

do you have a BUILT IN SOUND card you can try ?
I know it sounds really silly to deliberately lose the Audigy qulaity...
but TRY it....
I gave up with my Audigy 1.....and got a Revolution 7.1 .
The Revo gets SLATED for gaming cos it drains CPU....but hey.....2800XP and 1 gig mem.....Im happy to lose a bit of frame rate......and its FAULTLESS.
But it uses Sensaura for gaming..... algorythyms(sp?) to calculate sound.
Wont go back now

Its worth checking your TS settings too. Make sure everything is set to use the soundcard, not the 'primary device driver' or whatever the hell it says.
iirc, there's a checkbox for using direct sound, so try enabling/disabling that. Also, within the settings dialogue, try upping the TS priority and dropping the sampling rate.
Oh, and one last thing... I seem to remember within the Audigy control panel you can set the card to be half or full duplex... make sure its set to full duplex or it won't go either.
tbh, had a second hand Audigy 1 for about 2 weeks and binned it. I didn't need all the flash whistles and bells and it was more grief than was needed for a sound card.

Best sound Ive ever had is the onboard on mine :)

The mic on my headset is knackered!
I've just tried it with my old beige Creative desk mic (circa 1995) and it works fine :)
