    OnLive

Has anyone else tried this yet?

I picked up Space Marine for £1 earlier today and I have to say I was quite pleasantly surprised by the service. Initially I had been sceptical about the whole idea of streaming a game over the net but after trying it for a while I'm wondering if this might be the shape of things to come...?

Yes the resolution is somewhat lower than we're used to and there is a small but noticeable amount of input lag but the game still looks great and plays perfectly well.

Since the service just requires a decent net connection it's not unreasonable to assume that the technology could be distributed in cheap consoles or built in to TVs. Compatibility and piracy issues could be sidelined and prices could be slashed. It's not without it's down sides from a players perspective but as a mainstream distribution method I wonder if this is the beginning of the next stage of gaming.

    Re: OnLive

I had pretty much the same positive impression you had.

Noticeable input lag only happened rarely and was otherwise was a very pleasant experience.

I'm really hoping this takes off, just for the potential it holds in the future.

Also am heading to Eurogamer Expo so i'm looking forward to chat to the devs/techs etc. there. Maybe even get one of the free "microconsoles" they're handing out.

    Re: OnLive

I think the truly hardcore gamers will scoff at OnLive and similar projects on the future. but i did hear on BBC News' Click feature that there are free demos to download so it's time i tried it. like that old saying goes: don't knock it till you tried it.

    I really hope Onlive fails.

It's not a stretch to imagine a publisher like Ubisoft saying "to help eliminate piracy, we're no longer using always-on DRM. Instead the game can only be bought & played via onlive"

I have tried it and was impressed with the quality of it but still can’t convince myself to go along with it permanently

If it works and the price is right then why not i say... Hell of a lot less annoying than DRM.

    Re: OnLive

The one big problem if the OnLive is that they proms for games to be availably till for example 2014 or so.

If you buy it elsewhere it’s yours forever...

I'd rather they stopped DRM only affecting the people is shouldn't.

DRM - designed to impede pirates but the ONLY people it affects are the paying customers. Way. To. Go.

Less annoying? A game where you can't even tweak the graphics settings because all your PC is doing is streaming a video of some remote server running the game?

Better off with a console. At least it's lag-free.

Well i could argue that DRM programmers don't expect to be able to prevent pirates completely, more just delay the period from release to when it is cracked. Im not going to say its successful all the time but sometimes those extra day one sales make all the difference. In general I agree... unlikely they will ever manage to crack it though.

If it was laggy and the graphics settings where bollocks then no-one would even be interested, they would totally shoot them self int he foot. If they got the technology right, it wasn't laggy at all and the graphics are done well then there isn't much of a down side for most people.

    Re: OnLive

Not really sure what the problem is with gaming at the present time that it needs a service like this. I like having my own hardware and having the freedom that it provides.

I guess you could argue that I would never have to buy hardware again but I've had my computer for 6+ years now and it still runs everything on high with a little AA.

Also you could forget getting nice download speeds if you play games a lot. If your connection goes through a BT exchange there is no doubt they are going to cap your bandwidth.

    Re: OnLive

i think that onlive could be useful with the free 30min demos of any game but i dont have the best internet connection so i cant see myself using it very often, also i have my own custom build gaming pc so it would seem like a waste of money to not use the tech that is inside it. i think i will use it for seeing what a game is like or demoing it but i cant see myself buying anything from it

    Re: OnLive

The only thing that put me off was the cheap looking advert. If this is indeed is supposed to be the next best thing to pc gaming with out the hassle they need to spend more making me belive it gonna be the best.
