Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic

Just read about the Legacy System (didn't know it was last week's Friday Update) and it sounds awesome :

This build has our first iteration of the Legacy System! At its core the Legacy system is about allowing players to create a family tree of characters. Family is pretty important to the Star Wars universe, with the Skywalker family having one of the most interesting dynamics in movie history. This version is just the foundational components that we will use to build upon in the future. Here are the features of this iteration:

Once your character has completed their Chapter 1 storyline, they will be able to choose a Legacy Last Name. This Legacy Last Name must be unique and is shared across all characters, on all servers - so choose carefully!

Once you have unlocked your Legacy, any and all characters on that server will now contribute to that player's Legacy Experience Points. Much like normal experience points, when you reach certain Legacy thresholds, you will increase your Legacy Level.

We already have plans for how we will expand the functionality of the Legacy System in one of our major post-ship patches. This will include being able to shape your Legacy's family tree, and give you a reward for all those Legacy Levels.

We look forward to reading your feedback on the Legacy System!
One the one hand, i dislike how it favours someone who's played more over a shorter amount of time to create their "Surname". On the other hand i think it's just awesome .

For reference, i believe there are 5 chapters and the first chapter is pretty huge. The previous build came out 2nd November-ish and i was playing regularly up until the recent build (17th Nov.) and i'm only at Chapter 2.

Although that being said, i think i could have progressed the Class Story more, but i'm just finishing off the Planet quests ("World Arcs").

It's about 3-4 Planet's worth of materials to get past the first Chapter and they're fairly substantial in terms of both size and content.

In fact, i may skip the Planet quests and race to end Chapter 1, reserve a Surname and then go back and finish the quests.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic

i love this idea of legacy but it might restrict char names form a single barrel perspective, if that makes sense. Names designed to be one name etc
that said its a nice functionality that i've not come across before. I just hope to get a bit of a head start with early access (fingers crossed!!)

Early Access starts today, anyone in? I didn't pre-order until very late so I don't think I'll get more than 1-2 days of the 7 available...

If anyone is interested, I am going to be on the server The Red Eclipse (the guild I am in got selected for that server) and playing an IA:O, name to be confirmed.

What is everyone else playing, and which server (if decided)?

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic

I'll definitely be buying this game because i've been a long term fan of bioware ever since baldurs gate. I like like star wars also but my main reasons for buying is because its made by bioware and because I love mmorpgs. Anyway whats annoyed me is only being able to preorder online with origin? Whats that about? I don't want to get into an arguement about if origin is bad or good (although i was a little put out by that license terms scare a few monthes ago) the fact is i've got steam installed and don't want to clutter up my system with another similar program.
Is it possible for me to just pay for the game on a bioware/swtor website and download it from them? Like what WoW does.
Secondly; I played WoW for about 4 years give or take a year or so and it was amazing even if it did take up the majority of my time. I've been looking for an online game to fill the void since i quit WoW but so far they have been disappointing. That lord of the rings one, Fallen earth and Rift were the most recent games. What I want to know is how does Swtor stack up so far to these other games. Specifically, compared to say 'rifts' hype and opening weeks figures how does swtor compare. I really hope it does alot better. I'm not expecting a wow killer or anything but i'm hoping for something with at least a fair few servers and nice sized population.
On a side note. Just in the process of building a new computer from parts ordered from scan (cheers btw) using this game as an excuse

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic

i've played guild wars which was great, WOW which was boring, and recently rift which was boring too.

Does this MMO have a compelling storyline? variety in game world and less repetetive quests where you have to go to point A and kill x amount of enemies to complete a quest, collect reward and accept a new quest going to Point B and rinse and repeat?

Oh don't listen to me. I don't like subscription based MMOs for starters, and clearly prefer free-form games like Elder Scrolls to linear experiences like recent Bioware games.

Sorry, but you cannot compare a single player RPG to an MMORPG, they are completely different types of games.

The graphics on most MMO's are lower than normal to accommodate more players, the storyline is almost always worse as well (although SW:TOR is a heck of a lot better than any other MMO I have played) and you have to normally pay a monthly fee (free to play, or pay to win as I call them, I avoid like the plague).

However, what you do get in return is the ability to enjoy your game with others, compete if you want to for server firsts and in PvP, build up a trade network in some (I'm looking at you, Eve), enjoy yearly events, join with others for groups and raids into dungeons, keep progressing with your character (unlike completing a single player game and not having anything else to do in it)... it just depends if any of that interests you.

On topic again, I still haven't received my early access email, but I am unlikely to get it until the end as I only pre-ordered in Nov. No worries, too busy this week. I just hope I manage to get some game time in on the weekend.

I wasn't comparing them as the same type of game. I was simply asked which is better, which I take to mean they are both games competing for my money/time and I'll compare them as such in terms of the factors I look for when playing games.

If your criteria mandate things like multiplayer then obviously you're going to have a different opinion than me, but that's why I said 'in my opinion'. So, sorry, but I can compare whatever I like

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic

I've played and enjoyed both Skyrim and SWTOR.

Which one has my money? SWTOR.

At the end of the day, it's again a choice between Bioware RPGs and Bethesda RPGs and i've always stood on the side of the former.

Did not like Oblivion and whilst Fallout was good, the story was somewhat weak.

Skyrim has a lot going for it and even though i found it be be Oblivion v2.0 i felt it was executed much better.

With all that said, the one thing that Skyrim will never do for me is let me have a laugh with all my friends over mumble whilst we all quest together in a group of 2-4.

In fact, if you knew me IRL before Skyrim was released you would have heard me constantly bitching about their decision to put Dragons in the game over Coop.

Dragons are fun, but can't hold my attention as much as playing with friends.

And on a side note, how's everyone finding Early Access and/or what Server are you guys based on?

I got in yesterday in the 3rd wave (i believe), already have an Assassin up to Level 16 and a Warrior to Level 7. Currently situated on "Corellian Run" US East PvE server with my guildmates.

I also managed to get some tickets to the London Launch Event so will be attending that later tonight... hopefully there'll be some free stuff for me to nab ^^.

Lucky you, didn't pre-order until Nov so won't get in for ages. Nor did I get anything for tonight (stupid 150 person limit).

But, why on earth are you playing on a US server?!?!
