World war board game style PC game

I wasn't sure how to best title this thread, possibly the reason why I can't find the sort of games I'm looking for.

To be specific and as clear as I can;

I'm looking for strategy games that's sort of like the board games that you play with the objective of conquering areas on a world map, against human players, sort of like monopoly, but geopolitics or any other relations such as that stuff.

Sort of like Civilizations, Total War, but more like DefCon.

I can't quite remember what the board game definition was, to be exact.

Empire Earth is not quite exactly what I mean, as it's more like Age of Empires/Civilizations which revolves more around on development rather than pure political/tactical strategy.

Risk is exactly what I mean though.

A better question would be if anyone knows of any open source or web based sort of hidden gems out there, that would be what I'm looking for.

If not, I'll just resort to buying the physical board game, because it seems you're right about Risk being out-dated on the software side.
