    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

    Morning,

I'll be brief: Do you reckon this game liable to be accessible to someone who has literally never even seen the prior 4 games of the series?

I'm weighing up maybe getting it, but I'm not sure how easy it'll be to pick up for someone like me.

    cheers

Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Well, I picked up Oblivion without playing any of the others, or even playing a game like it before. I absolutely loved it and can't wait for Skyrim.

I'm pretty sure everyone will say to just try it, as it should be awesom!

Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

They're not really sequels to each, they are just set in the same universe. Like Odc above, I'd never played any of the games before Oblivion and the only mentions or references to previous games were more like Easter eggs rather than integral to the story.

That's fair enough, just not sure, too many games on the go at the moment and can't decide if I should let this one slip (plus I'm skint big time this month and xmas is far too close)

Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I've played Morrowind and Oblivion and I wouldn't say I needed to have played Morrowind to enjoy Oblivion. It helped a lot because the style of game is similar, the controls much the same and you kind of 'get' what to do without having to learn from scratch but I don't think it was necessary and would think you'd be fine going straight into Skyrim - as far as I know the story doesn't continue as such, it's not a sequel in that sense.

Yes. The games are all independent - you start a new and unconnected character each time, so much time passes between each game and they're set in such distant parts of the game world that the events of the last have very little effect beyond being a book in the new game.

The game mechanics and controls also change quite significantly between games, so they all have pretty excellent tutorials these days - Skyrim's is meant to be very good and the (completely reworked) interface is getting a lot of praise for it's intuitiveness.

I was thinking of picking up Oblivion now, playing through & by that time Skyrim will be nice and cheap, good idea or just jump feet first into Skyrim?

Good idea for its own sake - Oblivion is an absolute bargain for the amount of content. But it won't add anything to playing Skyrim save that it'll be less enjoyable to play once you've played Skyrim. I think there's a 5th anniversary edition which includes a discount voucher for Skyrim, not sure of the details though.

Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I really enjoyed Oblivion and given that you haven't played it and probably have a better PC now than you did at the time it came out (?) it might be an ideal time to play it. If nothing else it will give you a good idea of what Skyrim will be like and the worst case scenario being you don't like it, but have only spent a few quid on finding out and can save your Skyrim pennies for something else!

    Actually, not really

Maybe if you don't know if an open world game would suit you then it could be worth trying Oblivion or any other open world fantasy game (two worlds 2, Gothic 3 etc.) first, but otherwise Skyrim is going to be quite different to Oblivion in style, control, mechanics etc.

But I guess you already said the same thing in your first reply to this thread

I'm just walking into a local shop and picking this up on launch I think.

I need something to test my new overclocked beast of a gaming PC as nothings stressing my nvidia 3D setup at the moment apart from crysis 2 with the DX11 patch
