    Last night...

Was a mixed bag for me...

First mission, escort in Lagg 5s with Dak in VEF was ok (ish).

Dropped down from 5000 to have alook at a df going on to find that the 4 dots were all 109s.. I dropped right through the middle of them. I carried on going down, then levelled off, turned and climbed back up... got a bed on one of them and clipped his wing with a few rounds, he dove away and I lost sight of him. Tracers started steaming over the canopy so I nosed over, did a reverse Immelman and set a heading for home. Landing was a bit hairy with me on approach I see Dak landing. We agree I'll go over the top of him, but I'm so busy trying to not land on him I end up touching down halfway down the strip. I roll out for a few seconds and realise I'm not going to make it so I whip in the flaps, get the power on and go around... somehow I managed to haul the damn thing into the air at 150kph with the gear dangling and take off flaps set....

Next mission, ground attack in VEF was a bit of a bad one. Load up with bombs, uneventful flight to target when Dak starts getting flak... except I can't see ANY.. then Rias says she's getting flak too.. and still I can't see it. I fly over the target and bank round to see what's what and all I can see is factories and the like... nothing stands out as the target. I see the others going in so decided to do a low pass and hit anything that fires at me.

One fruitless pass later and I'm wondering what happened as my prop is now windwilling and I'm going down like Monica. I dump my bombs, drop some flap and start trying to coast for home (like I EVER had a chance of reaching it...). I do a dead stick landing in the rough, managed to keep the plane on its wheels and bail into captivity.

Next mission was in IL2s, loaded with cassettes to take out a convoy. No problems finding the convoy, but on my first pass I abort the attack run to take on a 109 heading straight for me. He's pumping rounds into an IL2 going int the opposite direction, so I lace the sky ahead of him with fire and watch him fly through a lead storm... got a few hits but not anything that puts him out of action. The very next second, my rear gunner opens up on someone and a quick cockpit swap shows a 109 dropping right on my tail. I get back into the pilots seat, pull hard over into him as he opens fire. His shots rake all the way down me, the cockpit shatteres, the gunner is wounded but worst of all he severs my ailerons cables. I try to pull it out using the trim but then he takes out my elevators too. I manage to twist it level with rudder but the big green hard thing called Earth is comeing up to say hi VERY quickly... scratch one pilot.

The last mission was a CAP in VWF. All the Spittys took off, to escort the P38s on GA. I loop around the airfield and came up behind the '38s to cover their backdoor. I see a few dots off to the south and saunter over to take a look. When I get there I find 5 109s on an intercept course with the '38s, so I make out to delay them a tad. I try to casually form up on them, but these guys are savvy and we get into some really aggressive turns. I throttle back, reduce prop pitch and haul the crate around inside each bogey to see them peel off and dive away. There's only me and 2 others left. One of them straightens out... making himself an obvious target, so I carry on turning onto his wingman. He levels off too and there's no way they can thing I've lost them as I'm right of their 8 o'clock. I smell a rat and look over my shoulder at the exact same moment the bugger up at 6000 saws my wing off in a classic B'n'Z.... I don't begrudge the pilot the kill... it was good comms that got me there.

It was lucky though, I dropped out of the game and as soon as I did, I lost my connection, crashed to desktop and everything went dog slow....

Decided to call it a night then... 4 missions was enough for one evening. By then it was 1.30 and I have to work today!

Comms is very important, when used properly, unfortunatly in VWF its so easy to loose your wingman (map fault) and everybody else. Am trying to organise some training where we constantly rendezvous in different sectors all the time, instead of 1 by 1 people getting seperated and killed.

As from Monday (most likely) VWF parser will automaticaly 'award' -10 pts for every smoke/light tap.

So am sure we will find a countermesure to overcome these problems.

Just aint like Stalingrad in winter no more
