Smile Battlefield 3 for low end users.

Right basically I have no money whatsoever so theres no chance in me upgrading.

But basically for low end users will we be able to run Battlefield 3?

    AMD Athlon 64 x2 2.9ghz
HD 4870 512MB (Running at 1024x768, my max resolution)
    3GB DDR2 RAM.

I have no idea if it'll run battlefield 3. It runs ARMA II, Battlefield Bad Company 2 on the highest settings.
But I have only ran on single player.

BF3 single player was fine with my GPU and CPU.

But like most low end users, the multiplayer area we are most unsure about. Apparently BF3 is more CPU friendly, but on 64 player map would this kill a dual core?

My GPU can run anything on ultra settings, but am not sure if my CPU is up to it. My mobo is an OEM board, am2, haven't been able to upgrade it so running the max cpu it can handle.

Thanks for any replies, its for people without some high end gaming pc.

Don't think you be playing on 64 player servers with that CPU.

I usually like middle servers, where it isn't awfully full. Could a low end CPU like mine at least run on a 32 server...

    AND
can someone explain WHY a quad core is a must for 64 maps? If my CPU can run single player maps, isn't the only additional load where other players are?

In older games like a 64 map in BF2142, a lower CPU is needed. If a map can be loaded on single player, what is the other information on multiplayer maps that causes much more load on the CPU?

If you can gather the map data, isn't it only data from where other players are?

Bit confused in why a faster processor is needed for larger maps.
    Thanks

Re: Battlefield 3 for low end users.

32 might be pushing it, might have to go lower then that, have you brought BF3 yet?

It's not just about player locations, it's the player location, player uniform, equiment loadout, weapons and when he fires, each bullet he fires must be tracked and shared among everyone else. It's also the graphic settings that your CPU will have trouble with, BFBC2 and now BF3 has always been more CPU then GPU. Last thing, bigger the map equals more work the computer has to do for it to display.

Since you can play BFBC2 at max settings, am sure you can play BF3 fine, 32 playes or 16 or whatever, who knows untill you try it. You likely be able to play 32 players just fine, but might get the FPS drops when the frag has hit the fan.

Should play absolutely fine at 1024x768. I can't see you having any problems running it at medium.

I would of thought you'd be fine too.

I'm amazed how well the game engine performs. I play on our 64 slot server @ 1920x1080 with everything on Low and get 30+ FPS always - normally in the 40s.

I do have BF3 installed on a seperate Windows 7 installation on my hard disk to squeeze out some extra performance. The game is always smooth for me

To be honest I ran Bad Company 2 with my old HD 4830 512MB, and only have had my HD 4870 a couple of days. Doesn't even struggle with Bad Company 2 so not worried about graphics.

Seen as most of you say my CPU will be ok, will get the game soon and report back on how well it runs

I expect fps to drop when theres lots going on, but a bit of lag is fine for me, aslong as it isn't constant

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

Oh and by the way, if I upgrade some time, would a triple core be enough? Or is it best to go straight to quad core? I would overclock a triple core if I ever got around to upgrading I will probably go to AM2+, I am not a big gamer, BF3 is the only reason I would upgrade.

Just for arguements sake for users with a low end system, would we see a performance boost with an overclocked dual core?

When things start getting a bit hectic, with explosions going off from all directions and helicopters and jets flying over, that's when an overclock on your CPU would show its benefits.

Re: Battlefield 3 for low end users.

    No I haven't bought BF3 yet.

Graphics wise, I am not worried at all, on my resolution my HD 4870 will max it

Its the whole CPU thing I am worried about.

Was thinking I could get an ASRock N68C-S-UCC AM2+ board and get a 3.0ghz triple core? Maybe overclock it a bit. I haven't got much money, and when I do I can't go flat out and get high end stuff.

I would have to revert to going on eBay to get the CPU!

Re: Battlefield 3 for low end users.

To be honest the game is very well optimised. I think your CPU might struggle with the larger 64 player maps, but if you keep the settings to 1280x1024 or lower with medium settings you will be achieving 50fps comfortably when the CPU isn't bottlenecking. I would expect 32 player maps will be fine.
