Selling PC games on, is it possible

I purchased recently Batman Arkham City and I have completed the game and would like to forget about gaming again so seriously like I did over Christmas. Due to the license agreement I can sell the physical disc but the key is mine, seemingly forever. I hope I am wrong.

Do many PC games work this way also and are console's doing anything similar?

It's the end of gaming for me for games like that just due to this.

Re: Selling PC games on, is it possible

Consoles aren't... yet. They're trying to introduce it though - two EA games I've had recently have given you an "online code". Without the online code, which is tied to your EA account I believe, you can't play the game online. And of course, the game only comes with one. So if you buy the game second hand, you have to buy a new code from the games company.

All Steam games are impossible to sell on.

Unless you sell your steam account, some people are setting up new accounts for each game so they can do just that.

Re: Selling PC games on, is it possible

Steam games cannot be resold, full stop. Many other games (e.g. Blizzard games) are also based around single-use codes too. Some games are half & half, e.g. EA games include a single-use code for some content (e.g. online play, or some quantity of singleplayer) which can only be used once, or bought separately for about £10

Don't the companies involved think this will kill things off slightly and I brought a hard copy because of Streams rules, but it turned out to be just the same. Can't fault half life though, atleast that has been a buy that was worth it.

Anyone old enough to rerember all the second hand gaming shops from years ago? I rerember one that no matter what the game they was all listed as £25.

I picked up Resident Evil 2 on PS during the week of its release and felt I was ripping the shop off.

Re: Selling PC games on, is it possible

I'm not exactly old and I still remember them

The one I went to was great, a little independent store with a loyalty card that had absolutely no effect on anything that I could ever discern and filled with these huge bins that just had hundreds of games for PC, consoles, you name it all lined up. Spent many a happy hour flicking through there, and remember distinctly wondering why there were so many copies of Grim Fandango. Sadly I never bothered actually buying it because the box art looked so bizarre and missed that boat entirely.

If the last game you bought from them was 14 years ago, I don't think they care much.

The main problem is developers feeling the sting from being undercut by retailers with used goods. A new game releases for £40 on the high street, with about £10 going to the game publisher/developer and £20 to the shop. Three days later the same game is sold second hand for £35, with £0 going to the game publisher/developer and £35 to the shop. Which is a price-conscious buyer more likely to buy? And if the game has long-term running costs (e.g. multiplayer servers) then how many people should get time on those servers from the initial sale, when their price model assumed one human's worth of server load per copy sold?

With the crazy price of development of modern games, there aren't a huge number of options.

Yeah I always do that, just things have changed a lot so quickly. I'm only in my late 20's so shouldn't really do the 'back in my day'

I miss those shops though, I know browsing steam is convenient but browsing a shop and all the PC games had those huge boxes where it actually felt like you just purchased something. Planescape Torment on like 6 CD's and stuff, just doesn't compare now. Saying that I'd probably be to lazy to go and just log onto steam if it were like that now haha

Re: Selling PC games on, is it possible

The Pound Store near me has been a source of old games recently. I recognize the names of most of the games; they were yesterday's blockbusters. Most are surprisingly playable and I don't need to worry about the hardware requirements or Web connectivity. Best of all, they have printed manuals, fiction and artwork. The turnover seems high. There's definately a market for cheap games. Not everyone has money for the latest £50 release. The extras are a bonus.
It suits me. If I can't play it without going online, I don't buy it. Much of what I saw for sale in Game recently needed Steam. This rather limits my choices but I'm stubborn.
... I use now a big vent for the whole machine now, but I cant use it forever, it is my grandma's ventilator...

Ive got a friend who bought a game second hand and through several hours talking to steam support was able to get the game removed from the original owner and placed onto his account, so it is possible but requires alot of hassle.

Yup computer games will end up all being only available via an online account and that you will not own a physical copy of the digital format. The Digital wallet is being piloted for ages ... means you don't hold any cash in your own pocket. The UK pilot scheme was in shops like Mc D's and Boots check out it's at bbc .

Enjoy life while it's still yours

One advantage of Steam is that if you change your PC, you still have the game, but if you don't play the game online (I prefer the single-player storyline), you still can't sell it on when you're fed up. Is it only when 1st purchasing that you can gift games to people on Steam?
