Just wondering if any of you guys play lord of the rings online. It's free to play but is a bit of a grind at first but once you reach higher levels can be quite good.
Of course you can subscribe for additional benefits but you don't have to![]()

I'm guessing that's a no then
I've always been tempted to try out WoW as i've got a 10-Day free trial key, but if I like it it's like i've thrown money away on LOTRO, can you even play 2 MMORPG at the same time properly?
I ignored WoW for years then gave in and accepted a free trial from a work colleague. Enjoyed that for a while, but with the price of the expansions with the Sub on top i decided to leave it when the sub ran out. The Firelands thing was pretty dull and then the Pandarian expansion didnt really look that great so i ditched it. I'd bookmarked Lotro a while before and decided to have a look.
Been with Lotro for quite a while now and love it. The Turbine system is excellent. If games like WoW used the same purchasing framework i reckon there would be even more players. Yes they hit people wih the costs above i mentioned but its so samey that many people play for a few months after expansion then ditch it til a new one comes out. With turbine and paying for what you want/need its more open.
As the OP said definitely worth a look![]()
Ahh at last, another player
Like you say, the turbine system seems to work really well and you are able to experience a very large amount of the game without paying a penny. You just have to spend a bit of time farming turbine points. All expansions can be bought using these points also
There is a great deal of effort gone into following the lore of Tolkien and whilst that's not my interest it's very impressive![]()
been a MMORPGer for many years and by far LOTRO has had me leave and comeback and not feel disheartened like WoW did, only downside is since its moved over to state side the forums are just very poor and you need to get into a good guild thats active and willing to help lotsd when needed.
The guild in in is very much like that (its 5yrs old now) and the last time i had such a good guild was in release of WoW and Dark Age of Camelot before that.
I missed the lifetime offer but still pay VIP most months.
forgot to say i need a new rig to play it as its struggling on my laptop when im trying to raid, wouldnt even attempt a T2 raid without a new system![]()
Hi Tinolan, great to see another MMORPGer who isn't WoW orientated
It is the first MMO I have ever played and I enjoy it, doubt I would switch to any other as i'm now at level cap and playing endgame which im quite enjoying.
The forums are a little poor, they do have beta in their title, but that is a little poor for something that many many people are paying a monthly sub for.
The game does seem to need a fairly hefty PC to run it smoothly, it's very much CPU biased as opposed to GPU. T2 raids can be fun with the right group, but you'll likely need to be geared up to do them easily![]()
I havnt played it in ages, I'm near the start of the game, Bree town quests and surrounding area (Done all the dwarf start area stuff and skipped doing the low level hobbit area quests). Might actually reinstall it tonight. I bought the gold edition when released so got a mount and few other items free and didnt lose them when it went F2P. Just need to remember what server I am on.
ferral im guessing its evernight. http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-mmog/197180-lotro.html
they did a server merge between EU and US last year though. your account may still be there but you've lost your characters.
have a read around the LOTRO forums for other people who missed the merge.
thats if you didnt transfer.
the last time online only goes to day and month. Magrim was last on 08/14 at 10.15pm, and hes in Bree. incase you're wondering.
and yes i'm still playing around with my chars on there. though not as much as before, blame witcher 2, minecraft, diablo3 and my sister for that![]()
I remember doing the transfer from the CodeM account over to Turbine a while ago now and I think I played about 6 months ago briefly and he was still there so think I should be ok. Will pull it down overnight tonight, been holding off as the rumour mill has been running saying its going to land on Steam, have to wait and see on that one regardless.
Actually will set it away in about 5 mins, not using the net to much at the min
the last i heard about that steam rumour, was that if you add LOTRO to the steam list via add a non steamgame, you can launch it from steam and use the steam overlay to chat/voice talk. not heard anything else about that or tried it myself.
There you have it. LOTRO is now available on Steam, grabbed it last night.
Busy with TERA currently so will be a few days before can get back to middle earth!
yep just seen it, aprox £11 and you get 1000tp with that too.
well there you go then. i go and say one thing then they go and change it so what i just said makes me look like an idiot who doesnt know what they're talking about.
as for that £11 thing, you dont need it to play the game to start with. Just get the free2play one and then decide whether you like the game or not. then buy it later, because for 2 add on packs (~600TP each) a horse for each char and 1000TP its ruddy good value for £11
as for me, im sticking with the grinding option, i still need 4995 TP for isengard, and another 4295 for rohan thats out on sept 5th. then another 995TP for the 6th bag. so thats 10285 TP to get by september.
Currently got 2200TP and if i really try i can get 450TP a day. thats doing all the deeds (except sarnur and the underground barrows ones) in ered luin, shire and bree, in about 11 hours.
and thats just the free2play account.
ive also got a premium account which ive paid for isengard on, just need to get another 3000TP for rohan. the preoreder bonuses arent looking worth it a the moment to buy it for cash.
so thats that. back to grinding for me now.
If your new to LOTRO try and ignore the whole Riders Of Rohan expansion storm that's happening right now, there's a lot of upset people about the way it's being handled which shouldn't affect any new players progress until you are level 75 (probly 3 months min).
You never have to spend cash in lotro. You can buy everything with Turbine Points (TP) which you gain by completing deeds. Some of these are ultra boring, kill 250 of this monster for 10TP. Others are discovery deeds. The TP can then be used to buy the expansions.
Most Free-To-Play (F2P) players tend to have multiple characters so they can do the same deeds several times.
For the most part the game seems more populated with the more mature people, it's not all text speak and throwing insults about, it's much more civalised. Of course everywhere has it's idiots
Anyway, for free it can't be bad, give it a shot up to level 30 or so, see if you enjoy it![]()
Hi,
I played LOTRO when it came out (I seem to recall about May 2007). I only played for 2 or 3 weeks from memory. What would the procedure be for trying it again?
I tried playing warhammer online again a while back and gave up with all the account migrations, password resets and everything to try and get it up and running.
If it is fairly easy to get it running I'll give it another go.
Cheers
