Yea and the good thing is that you get to decide things and depending on what you chose to do i.e save someone or leave them. it affects your whole personal story

It's not about it being a rip off. I have been burned before with SW:ToR, paid £65 up front, got a terrible game in return that I never subbed for again and it's not nice to throw £65 down the drain when times are so tough.
Also, I don't like large initial outlays when there is zero chance to test it before buying. Their betas only appear to be available to those who have pre-purchased (not pre-ordered) so once you have paid, are you really gonna see the little bad points in the game, or are you gonna subconsciously ignore them to avoid feeling like you have wasted your money?
I dunno, everything I see and hear about this game makes it look and sound amazing, but I can't help be cautious about pre-purchasing. Let me put a fiver down, get access to the beta, then purchase it upon release if I like it with a £5 discount and I'll be happy. Force me to pay £50 for a game that isn't near release just to let me beta test poor performing old versions and I start to get sceptical.
i guess you never gamed on consoles as most games are £50 mate.
If times are hard for you then thats understandable but you wont know how good or bad this game is for u unless you buy it. it is as simple as that. unless ArenaNet release a demo of the game(diddnt they do so on GW1?) then you got no chance of trying it unless you buy it now.
Please read my impressions of the game. i have highlighted several issues with the game. i am not no blind fanboy who will argue that this game is perfect etc etc. i will tell u mate if the game is bad or not. i have bought a couple of games that i have regreted such as RAGE and you wont EVER see me defend my purchase of that game.
An MMO is complex. you cannot reall judge it after 2 days of playing. you need at least 2 months of playing before seeing if the game is good or not and you are low in cash your better off waiting few months after its release and seeing if the activeness of the game is still high because if it is still highly active after a couple of months then you know there is a big chance this game may actually be good.
SWOTR is pretty dead as i can see and you had to wait a few months to find that out. Had it still been highly active etc etc, even i would have probably given it a go now.
I think after 2 months of playing you can judge good value for money imo. The problem with starting late is you're going to have people shouting noob! at you and miss all the OP stuff pre nerfing.
I'm still on the fence about getting it as I more rl responsibilities responsibilities. I think I had over 1k hours on GW1 though and really keen to find people from my old clan......
I had the opportunity to play in the beta test last weekend and my opinions of it were mixed if I am honest.
I won’t go into the technical issues of not being able to log in, getting stuck in the ground and other bugs etc as this was a beta and all that will hopefully be cleaned up by release.
I picked a thief class which by the end of the beta I had managed to get to level 9 I think it was. Now I have never played GW1 and I certainly haven’t done loads of reading with GW2 so everything was fairly new to me. I am buying it based on the fact that I love MMO's and everyone keeps telling me how great it’s going to be.
I will try and compare and contrast with Josh and also add a few of my own opinions in.
I didn’t do any WvW so I can’t really comment on that. I did do one of the PVP instances which were just a simple capture and hold game with tickets. It was fun enough, I have no complaints. I finished top on my side (luck more than anything) but I am not sure what I even got out of it. Some currency to spend somewhere maybe?
The graphics: - The art style is wonderful, especially the big cities they have done a superb job with them. So good in fact that it makes the other areas feel a little unloved. Walking around the map can feel a little underwhelming when you have been to somewhere like Divines Reach. The graphics themselves in general are nothing to shout home about. Don’t get me wrong they aren’t bad but I would say they are fairly typical for a MMO. The skill animations are really pleasing especially some of the elementalist skills which look awesome. One really nice moment I had was when I was walking about I could see some hills in the distance, really far away, next thing all this ice came up from the ground on the hill and a few other flashes as there must of been an elementalist fighting up there? Either way it was a nice touch.
Fantastic World Design: - I can’t really comment on this as I only really saw Queensdale and Divine Reach. As I said above Divine's Reach was amazing which made Queensdale to me feel underwhelming. The area's where you will be public questing and the like just felt like a normal MMO area to me, something like Durotar in WoW (with a different palette) or Bree Land in LotRo for example. I am sure the more interesting areas will come later in the game. After all this was only a starter area.
Combat – The combat felt very fluid but difficult. In fact one of the things I enjoyed most was the difficulty of the combat. I honestly see it being made easier before the final release though. Unique skills based on what weapon combinations you are carrying and the ability to switch these in combat is a nice touch that works really well. The dodge aspect is a really important part of the combat. Avoiding that big attack can be the difference between life and death. It’s still the same old keys 1-10 to execute skills but it somehow feels fresh.
Dynamic Events – I only managed to experience one of these and it was right at the end so cant say much about them. I think the idea in principle is nice.
Story Mode – The characters in this for me were really well written and full of life. I definitely bought into the story. I only did one or two quests like Josh but thoroughly enjoyed what I did. It will be interesting to see how this pans out. As I only ever had one quest to do and the rest were these public quests types. Turn up, mash some stuff, get a pat on the back and walk away. Some people really like the story aspect of MMO’s and I wonder if there is enough of it in GW2
I like the idea of completing daily challenges, kill x amount of different enemies, gather x amount of different resources etc. This was a nice encouragement to just get out there and do your thing. I was really surprised at the lack of XP given for killing enemies. I was often getting 12 and 13 XP for killing a same level creature. I think this may be altered by the release date.
I also liked the idea of challenges which gave you skill points – these were spread across the map and often involved a difficult fight against a mob which did unique attacks, again reinforcing the idea that combat is not just about wading in there and mashing all the buttons, it involves some thought.
Overall a positive experience. It’s still an MMO when all is said and done but it has some really nice ideas.
Thanks for your impressions, nice to see opinions from fresh eyes to the series. Hopefully it'll be released soon to time with my new pc build ;D
Thank you for your write up on your thoughts from your Beta experience. The game is indeed sounding promising, I just hope that it allows for people who start a bit later (a couple months after release) are not left to far behind. Such as learning the expected dodge method or some other game play thing. The dodge thing sounds like it could make a rather big difference in PvP.
Best thing about the game is that a complete noob can join a pvp or wvw match from the get go as character stats are all auto leveled to max. The only difference is that pvp you also get level 80 skills but in wvw you only can use the skills you have unlocked. But if you just spend 2 3 hours you can unlock some decent starting skills that will be sufficient for wvw
Thanks. So its not like say WoW, that if you start the season late you get absolutely slaughtered until you can grind up enough gear. So no matter what level you are (in world levels) when you enter the battleground all are equal on game levels? That I think is a good thing, kinda prevents 'twinks', though I did enjoy playing in the different level brackets while levelling up, until it was so very broken (it was never perfect).
I guess this format of making skills equal will cause a large impact on gear dependency? Is there any indication that GW2 will have micro-transactions for gear or other stuff, as I know there is a purchase fee though it does not stop some developers jumping on the wagon to milk more funds. I find micro-transactions destroy a game.
Its not gear or skill dependancy mate. its pure "players skill"
always been since gw1
I always thought the idea was to mash as many buttons as you can at once with your face?
Thanks, I never got around to playing GW1, I think I should of now that I think about it and hear more about it. I really must have been living under a rock or something, or just plain out distracted by everything else. I'm looking forward to giving it a go when I can get my hands on it, though its still looking like it will be a fair bit later in the year.
Nothing like a good quality faceroll heh? :P
Anyway, since its Beta testing time, and pre-orders are out now, I'm guessing official release is about mid summer? Though that does not make much sense, as I thought that most MMOs tend to have a slight dip over the summer with regards to player activity. With it picking up again for the November pre-Christmas releases?
Good to read the reviews on here.
I got into GW1 after a new colleague recommended it to a few of us. 1 mate was utterly hopeless at it and just whined about it not being final fantasy i suspect that was mainly because he kept dying haha.
I really enjoyed it as you had the ability to make a group from NPC's without standing around trying to find a group. Thats something that with the likes of WoW and Lotro i see as downsides you end up waiting for groups so much. More of a problem with WoW as you are paying for the game and a subscription for the privelidge of standing around. I know they fixed it by porting people to instances etc but even still. Lotro is pretty terrible for getting a group at all, but on both of those i largely played as solo anyway, just meant i had to miss some parts out due to needing a party to stand a chance at high level stuff.
Im pretty interested in getting GW2 now. Good to see new players will not end up left behind based on late-starting etc. as i shall wait a good while for any/all bugs to be ironed out and actual reviews of the finished game. Despite the group issues in Lotro thats still going to be my main avenue for now as i really like the system and want to see more of it before i lose myself in a new MMORPG
Well I thought I'd dust off the old Guild Wars games in preparation for the new release, not as easy as first thought!
Guild Wars account name; one of two email address, I think I know which one. Password, one of a few. Character names... it's been a while! I remember deleting a couple of characters. So how about my NCSoft account. I have my account name in an email thankfully. Password guessed right first time. Verify a new location, dammit. Security question, I'm sure it made sense at the time! Email address, again one of two.
Well after a few tries lets just say I can no longer login from my current location
How about I contact support? Physical Address, well it's got to be one of half a dozen addresses in the past few years. Original billing, how I am supposed to remember which credit or debit card I used? :wallbash:
I'll have another go later, but it's looking like I might just have to create a new account! I hope they let me reuse my email address if it currently associated...
