EVE Online - Worth a Try??

Like most gamers I've been around the block a few times when it comes to the different MMOs that are out there but I've never really tried EVE Online. Does anyone on here play it and what do you make of it?? Is it a game most people will enjoy or is it a very niche market game? Also since its been out for YEARS now would I ever be able to play it seriously or would I be too far behind??

    Thanks,
    Rookie

I got bored with it after a few weeks. I was a carebear and really didn't like losing hundreds of hours worth of equipment to teams of nasty bullies

Re: EVE Online - Worth a Try??

Why not try for yourself? Trials are readily available.

I really enjoyed the trial - yes, as a newbie you don't go into 0.0 space except as a suicide run for the hell of it, but when you take the attitude of making sure you can afford to lose what you're currently using then it's no problem. I avoided PvP, just had fun PvE and trading - was pretty successful for the amount of time in a trial on my own.

I only didn't continue because I would be hooked

Re: EVE Online - Worth a Try??

EVE is a long term game, with hellish economics, they actually employ a full time economist to keep an eye and tweak the in game economy.
There is some amazing stuff going on in that game, but again the player base thinks long term too, eg the recent burn jita thing http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...-ing-brilliant http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...urn-jita-event
It's great the way the developers/publishers have a fairly hands off approach and give the players a lot of free rein, but when you realise that they spent 4 months to plan and build up the resources, to make the ships for a few days of sustained attack you realise that this isn't really a casual drop in MMO

If you love science and technology, space and awesome nebulas and scenery you will love this game. The only problem is that its pay to play and because of certain gamers who have played for a long while are more dominant and own the freaking market and own a freaking army of players. You wont be that far behind, i thought the same too when i started but its really hard because of the Ai that is meant to help you out doesn't really help you at all. The first hour of my game time i spent floating in space in a life pod trying to figure out how to get back to the station. It is complicated game but you learn as you go along. Luckily i joined a group and they helped me along. Word of warning though, Smargh is right about the annoying bullies and there is no level Exp in this game. Its about class building so when you train a skill it started slowly by waiting one hour and then when it hits its highest level it takes a week and when you've reach a higher skill that you need to train it takes a month. Another warning is that don't take other people belonging in space because they will come for you and destroy your ship and you'll have to buy another ship and equipment. I learnt the hard way. I've still got this game on my pc and haven't played it due to the fact i have to pay for this game. I hope i ain't putting you off this game because this game is awesomely fun and beautiful.

Re: EVE Online - Worth a Try??

As a relatively long-term EVE player (going on 2 years now) I can tell you it's unlike anything else I've ever played, and I love it to bits. It's also completely dependent on getting in with a good group of players, as doing the more interesting things in game requires having some trustworthy people to do it with.

If you do decide to give it a go, it's worth joining EVE University (an in-game player guild, or corp in EVE terms) for a few weeks. They're a massive organisation who exist solely to teach new players about the various areas of EVE, and they give out some free stuff to help you find your feet too. It'll give you a reasonably solid grounding in most of the common game areas, a chance to work out what you want to do in game and a chance to make some friends to do it with.

Re: EVE Online - Worth a Try??

Definatly worth a try, I'm not much into combat in the periods where I do play it but its a vast game and its thrilling how everything is player driven. I was a miner myself (sounds boring...it kind of is) but I liked being part of something greater in a corporation and belonging to a fleet of other miners, travelling with an escort in an ice field far in space.

It's a great game, however as some eluded to its not a short term game. To get the most out of it requires long term planning and commitment.

I'm in my 6th year of the game and still have a plan stretching another year at least!

been playing on and off !! My big mistake was and still is trying to understand putting the right modules together and doing the right research !! What i did is research just about everything i can but now stuck to do research for a second character as you cant have the two doing the same thing unless you open an second account
Im not a great payer but i still get drawn in for a bit of restfull gaming and explore If only someone can help me out to have the right ship so i can enter the lower secs and survive

Santiago72 in my EVE name ..

Thing with low sec is that you really need to be part of a corp to go out in as people will just bundle you through the gates.

I live deep in 0.0 but I couldn't do it without being part of a big alliance and under their protection.

In a nutshell yes! (9 Year vet here!)

If you need a trial pm me your email address and I can send you an extended 21 day one. I can also speak to my ceo about recruitment, we live deep in 0.0 in the north. We are currently waging war down in the south, so you need about a few hours tops to train the right skills and we can get you into a frigate into PVP ops!

I've finally got my sec status back to an acceptable standards. Goiing carebearing and training my alt which I'll then split my account, hopefully by then I'll have my dual monitors. Which I can then solo incursions, pirate, mission running or gank moar hulks haha!

Marmite game IMO. 30 day free trial, cant go wrong with giving it a try.

There are so many things you can do on the game, and many many playing styles. If choice and freedom in games is your thing you should like EVE.
