    Official Valve Linux blog

Finally no more 3rd party news overhyped by Phoronix at every opportunity - Valve has started their own Linux blog.

So far the Steam client is working with most major functionality implemented and L4D2 is running natively but with some optimisation left to do.

Current efforts are focusing on Ubuntu, but with plans to support other distributions at a later date.

    Re: Official Valve Linux blog

When I saw this news that Steam was finally coming to Linux, I was sooo excited. Using Linux consistently throughout my University work, this now gives me a more ideal reason to install a distro onto a disk partition on my pc - yay XD

Valve have already discovered and reported several driver and kernel bugs. Based on the last paragraph or 2 of the blog, their current progress and bug reports, and the fact that Valve are generally awesome, leads me to believe that they'll be a helpful force in the Linux ecosystem.

They've also recently hired Sam Lantinga, the original developer of SDL. If you don't know already SDL is an open source programming library somewhat analogous to DirectX. It's not as advanced yet, but is about to release V2. Hopefully Valve will throw their support behind SDL, which will be a boost to anyone trying to port to or write games for many platforms, not just Linux.

Have to admit, only thing keeping me to Windows right now is game compatability I'll gladly switch to Linux to avoid Windows 8.
