Star Wars TOR going F2P later this year

Well, its been 8 months since the release and subscriber numbers have been dropping so Bioware have decided to go the F2P route with the game. Non paying players can play up to level 50 and some of the endgame stuff wont be available.

Full article is on Gamespy :

they should take a leaf out of STar trek online and offer unlimited access. The above method will just pee people off. Bascially everyone should have access, you either grind or pay for the best stuff.

I wonder why numbers are dropping? is it not good enough/ boring?

Re: Star Wars TOR going F2P later this year

I played it for about 2 months, it was "Ok" its not ground breaking and is a modern version of Warcraft set in the star wars universe.

The problem is that it is not really a combat game, the combat esp with ranged weapons can be clunky and the melee combat is scripted with about 4-5 moves that can be used in combination.

It was as I said "Ok" but I wouldnt want to pay for it every month

Most people, including myself, wont usually divide their time between multiple MMO's. I wonder why people would choose F2P star wars over GW2 which will be released before Star Wars even goes free to play.

Its worrying that Star Wars has decided to go F2P so soon after its release. Surely that would suggest that the gameplay just isnt there. I am sure I read they have dropped below 1 million subscribers as well.

There are many F2P games out there so it's not like it's just a choice between SWTOR and GW2. While I'm sure GW2 will be very successful its play style won't appeal to all and the more products out there the better for the consumer.

That's true, it seems the gameplay isn't strong enough (relative to competition) to warrant the monthly subscription for many players. At least one of my long time MMO friends left due to the cost (she has financial restrictions). According to the official responses from Bioware, 40% of subscribers who left cited the monthly subscription as the reason. As a very casual player I'll continue to play regardless but I will likely adopt the F2P option since I don't run warzones, operations, or FP's at the moment due to RL commitments. It's a bonus for people like me since I will get to play the same way I do now for free.

Can't say I'm surprised, a WoW clone this late to the party was always going to burn.

I quit one month in. It was boring and 95% it tried to lure you in by a good story.

It was a very cold and empty game, Maybe if they had less servers then it would feel more alive...

Anyway, not a surprise with GW2 knocking on the door!

When this was being released, I strongly considered SWTOR, but the cost of the game and monthly subscription really put me off. Even though the game did not live up to the expectation, I look forward to checking this out F2P.

Several of my friends were in a similar situation at launch. They thought £45 (standard edition) for a subscription based MMO was ridiculous and I agree. If it wasn't for the fact I was so bored with my gaming at the time I probably wouldn't have bothered either. I've always played subscription based MMO's so that part didn't concern me.

Personally hesitant to try GW2 since I had several friends nag me to try GW1 and I never got into it. Even with the insanely easy level progression to 20 I lost interest after 16. Bought one expansion and only played it for a few hours, just couldn't get engaged in the world. On the flip side I have several friends who still haven't stopped raving about how great GW1 was and can't wait to play GW2.

SWTOR is not for the hardcore MMO player, whether it's PvP or PvE. It does offer some good appeal for the more casual gamers (play < 10 hrs a week) since you can log in briefly and feel you've progressed or achieved something.

Was very empty but since the server moves it is much better, running around previously I didn't see a soul except in the fleet but now there are a lot more folks about.
