how the HELL do ya get a jet plane to stall like that....then pan/spin on its belly down ward...
that bloke is a NUTTER.....total fruit loop.....the nose up, tail forward "wheelie" stunt is just gob smacking....
un-frikkin-believable![]()

They should re-do top gun with that manoeuver in it for watch this as he flies right by

Its all due to movable exhaust & intakes I think ?

Yep - thrust vectoring exhaust nozzles, engines that don't conk-out when the airflow is severely disrupted, and no flight control computer that stops other planes even thinking about doing the same thing.Originally Posted by Moby-Dick

Nope, it's not the nozzles.
It's a manuever called the "Pugachev Cobra", where the angle of attack limiter is temporaily disabled, allowing you to pull silly AoA whilst still maintaining some forward speed. It bleeds off massive amounts of E and airspeeds in next to no time at all. If you do it mid loop you can actually pop the plane right over the top and do a mini loop. You can also do it mid turn at altitude obviously allowing you to pull lead on a target and snap shot a missile off. It's a deadly manuever for sure... Oh and any Flanker varient can do it - you can actually do it in LOMAC as well.
It shows off the massive structural strength of the Flanker series - they just lap it up. And the tail slide goes to show you that Russian engines won't flame out even when air isn't rushing through them. The USA have got the best avionics and radar by far, but you can't beat the Russian engineers airframes. They're just simply marvellous!
That's the critical bit that makes the Flanker such a deadly tool. It's a bit like TVR (Russian plane) vs an Audi (US plane). The TVR is all raw power and agility, but you need to be skilled to drive it well - but if you are, you can push it to the limit and occasionally beyond should the need arise. The Audi however is all computers with limits - and once you hit them that's it - no more scope in the envelope for that extra 10% which can be all you need to win the fight..Originally Posted by Skii

Very true Lowe, lets not forget the weaponry these babies carry as well, their R-27 radar guided missiles apparently far out-range their Nato counterparts, the R-73 Archer is probably the best close range heatseeker in the world, and the R-77 (not currently carried by the Flanker but is in development is more than a match for the AMRAAM.
Plus he locks any of these onto you by merely looking at you
Awesome machine.
Very true, the R73 is a seriously tasty bit of kit and will work at silly angles off boresight.
The R27 aint bad - massive long reach, but without the radar to back it up it's a bit limited. You have no idea at range whether the missile hits home or misses, or is even close to the target, unlike American missiles which give you a count down on the HUD. The Russian pilot is left looking for a smudge in the sky to indicate the hit.
The R77 is indeed the way forward for the Russians but so far it's only working with the new radar in the MiG29... I guess in time they'll sort it with the Flanker but with the lack of money over there I doubt it'll be any time soon.
That manouvre is called Cobra and was present from su-27 onwards iirc.
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.
I believe the Mig-29 was the first to perform the cobraOriginally Posted by dkmech
Yup, though the Flanker does it better, hence gets a lot of the credit for it.Originally Posted by Skii

Anyway they do make me feel quite proud and tingly inside, although how good they are gonna be against latest american tech i am not sure about.

I'm at work, I watched it, its great..
The thing looks awsome in a video, I cant imagine how much more awsome it'd look IRL as you loose a lot of the depth in an airdisplay on TV etc...
