Well yes, The Run looked bad from the start, and the reviews were spot on. How much did you pay for it?

GTA IV (15GB of bugs, even on PS3)
Dark Messiah (heroes of might and magic, millions of bugs, memory leaks..)
Diablo 3 (it has balance issues all over, especially on inferno difficulty)
Alice: madness returns (there's a bug which caused me to uninstall the game, as one of the weapons did not work at all, known bug)

All the weapons in the "normal" game are fine. However, there are only attack key bindings for "giant Alice" mode and "side-scrolling submarine" levels mapped on a joypad, not on keyboard. You can fix the config file, or use the joypad, to make the game entirely completable.

Re: PC Games you shouldn't buy/download

Dungeons, was hoping that it was going to be very much like Dungeon Keeper. Unfortunately not and I just cant really get away with it, will give it another shot at a later date.

Tropico 4 is worth getting, however there isn't a great deal of difference from the third game in the series which is awesome.

GTA IV on PC, buggy as hell and poorly optimised for the PC.

Last Remnant, got it free from trading a few games in at Greenman Gaming. Absolutely hate it and it gives me a really bad headache whilst playing. Typical FF type stuff but not as good.

Sacred 2 Fallen Angel, appears to be a good game if you can get it to run without crashing for more than 5 minutes. Even patched up it still crashes out to the desktop from title screen or ingame. Don't get me started on the patching process either, its just a complete mess. Incremental patches and auto patching doesn't work at all and you have to get about 7 standalone patches and install them one by one. Once done after a good few hours it still doesn't work!

Clive Barkers Jericho, I love Undying to this day, great haunted house story. Was hoping the Jericho would have similar feel to it. I have tried so many times to like this game, I always get bored and sick of it during the Roman ERA on it, their tower shields can stop barrages of bullets and magics - go figure! I will get to the end of it 1 day!

Die by the Sword with its expansion from GOG. Absolutely horrendous control scheme really spoils what is supposed to be a decent hack n slash fantasy game. You control your sword swings with you mouse movements, just feels weird and unnatural. Thankfully got it in one of their weekend sales a while back so it was cheap. I have yet to actually get out of the training area and see the full game!

Stormrise, thought it was going to be similar to Universe at War and the C&C / DOW games. How wrong could I be, its absolutely horrendous, awkward to play and you can see it was designed with console in mind. Kind of a 3rd person attempt at RTS. It just doesn't work!

EA games on PC always seem to have a lot of bugs, especially on release, so I tend to avoid them nowadays.

I won't say you shouldn't buy them, but the Mass Effect games have horrendous mouse acceleration and sensitivity options (luckily it is fixable in II).

    HAWX 2

This is my review from an earlier time

    -----------------

This is my review for HAWX 2 on PC

With the last Ace Combat game being released for the Playstation console in 2006 and the only one to be released for the XBOX 360 in 2007, there had been a huge gap in the arcade flight sim games genre. With no news from NAMCO BANDAI of a new Ace combat game, the avid gaming Pilot was at a huge loss. UbiSoft then came to the rescue as they released HAWX 1 in 2009. Though it wasn't as epic as the Ace Combat series, it was definitely something to quench the thirst.

HAWX 2 was subsequently released by UbiSoft in 2010, first on PS3 and XBOX360 and then three months later on the PC. To combat piracy, HAWX 2 talks to UbiSoft servers throughout the game and you need to be on the net when youa re playing HAWX 2. Till now, the pirate community hasn't come up with a way round this for HAWX2. HAWX1 had DX10 benefits and in HAWX2 you again saw DX benefits in the form of DX11 Ground tesselation. HAWX2's story continues on from HAWX 1 with you being re-acquanited with Crenshaw. But, Crenshaw gets injured within the first few missions and he acts as a Ground control / co-ordinator during the rest of the game while he recovers. The story of HAWX 2 is that terrorists are causing problems worldwide such as in the Middle East. While in Russia, seaparatist forces hijack aircraft, jets, tanks, etc. to dethrone the Russian Prime Minister. Thanks to a betrayal by a close one, they succeed and take over the Government. The US does not like this and provides support to the rightful Prime Minister and helps him take back the Kremlin. [ Thank God, it wasn't a US vs Russia plot over again! ]

You don't play the whole game as the same pilot like in HAWX 1. HAWX 2 takes a Modern Warfare 2 Single player approach and you find yourself stepping in different pilot's shoes for different missions - You play as a USAF pilot, a RAF pilot or a Russian Air Force pilot.

The story mode is enjoyable to play but unfortuantely, you won't feel like playing it a 2nd time. There is a Co-op play and this may make things interesting if you are using multiple screens to span your Display. The Multiplayer is virtually non-existent. You can hardly find any matches or any players! And, if you do find a game, you are forced to be in Cockpit view during the match, no.. the Change camera button doesn't let you go to 3rd person view!
Coming back to the Single player, you do not get to choose your Aircraft or the weapons pack like you could in HAWX1 i.e. No Hangar. You are forced to use a particular aircraft with a particular weapons pack and the assortment of weapons provided is seriosuly lacking. So, in other words you coudl say that the number of jets provided is very limited.

    HAWX 1 Hangar

The graphics also isn't as sharp as HAWX 1. You can look at your fighter jet in a mission and not help wonder why it looks so DX9. You also don't feel the WARP/Slipstream/Hyperspace burst effect when you boost your jet - you do hear the burst sound but there's no air rushing past effects. The HUD also doesn't look as stylish as HAWX 1. Enemy fighter jets are more difficult to hunt down this time as your Heat seeking missiles do get tricked by enemy flares. So, Lock-on is a bit difficult. You also have a Precision bomb weapon in HAWX 2. As soon as you fire a Precision bomb , you have to guide it until it hits the target. Another improvement is that you need to Take off and Land. This is compulsory but adds to the realism.

    HAWX 1 in-game

    HAWX 2 in-game

Of course, you don't sit on your jet all day and end up going to the Physio! You can take control of UAV's to eavesdrop on conversations and you can also be an AC130 gunner and aid allies on the ground. There is a night-vision and a thermal vision mode available as well.

There is evidence of the HAWX 2 development team playing Ace combat games. They try to rush multiple Ace combat scenarios in the last mission. In Ace Combat squadron leader, the way Chopper died , in HAWX 2 two of your USAF team mates also die but they die pointlessly and you don't feel sad like you did for Chopper. If you can remember the Megalith mission in Ace Combat Shattered Skies, you will have to once again go inside a bunker and destroy a Ballistic missile. And, of course, you have to go chasing ballistic missiles hunting as they speed away towards the sky.

After I finished the game, I did find weapons packs in the Arcade mode. But, forcing a pilot to replay the Single player or the Aracde mode or the Survival mode multiple times to gain points and then using those points to unlock weapons packs is unacceptable.

Re: PC Games you shouldn't buy/download

If you think GTA IV on the PC is buggy, you should try Saints Row 2. Probably the worst port I have ever played. The framerate skips all over the place unless your processor is just the right speed - too fast or too slow, and it goes insane. Only fix is a dodgy application you have to run simultaneously, made by a fan, which still doesn't work very well. It's insulting that it's still sold imo.

As for recently regretted big-budget purchases, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Promised to be a return to the old style, i.e. NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 in 2002, but it's a shadow of its former self. There's so much glitter and rubbish all over the place you can barely find the game, and when you've scraped off all the junk, there's not much in the core either. It doesn't help that the console graphics are appalling either. I was trying to play on a 22" TV, and it really doesn't work, everything might as well be invisible.

And, strangely enough, Gran Turismo 5. I bought a PS3 with that game in mind, many years ago, and I really shouldn't have done. It was perfectly okay, but I'd exhausted most of the gameplay very quickly, and there's far too much focus on silly events, like the Top Gear races (where you can't even bump the other cars - have they even watched Top Gear?), a ridiculous F1 style car that doesn't exist. The fun for me is in picking up weird cars to suit particular events, like a RWD card from the 60s, or a 4x4 with a turbo, and tuning them if you've got enough money, racing more if you don't. Instead I just did a few pretty easy events, got loads of money, got loads of cars, and then about all that was left was hours and hours of dull endurance races. Yawn.

Re: PC Games you shouldn't buy/download

    Il2 Sturmovik: Cliffs Of Dover.

If you already play it regularly, you might disagree, but that probably only means that you're used to the bugs and other issues, like myself.

Short summary, when it came out it looked quite nice, but had issues, later patches introduced more issues whilst cutting down on the eye candy to try and fix things. The recent beta patches have made it more stable (no more memory leaks) but the beta isn't available through steam, which is used by the game for purchase and drm, so you'll have to manually download and install it. The recent patches have dramatically cut back the eye candy, and it's progress in the flight model department is going backwards. It seem's to be flawed with regard to its advertised 128 player online battles, and it also appears to be a stop gap while the dev's finish the next in the series, a kind of easy way to make money for the Russian devs to produce a nice Battle of Russia game perhaps. ( cynical, moi?!)

So, ~18 months after release, it looks and plays worse, and there is only a little hope that it will ever be fixed. Many previous supporters are now of the opinion that the game will be dropped soon, and are going to refuse to buy the touted sequel on principle.

It might get there one day, but for now, i advise against wasting your cash. I've not played it, but the new HSFX(?) patches for the old IL2 get some good reviews, so if you're desperate for a reasonably accurate flight combat sim, the old one is probably a better way to go.

While i'm on the subject, if you are looking for a reasonably accurate flight combat game, do not get either of the HAWX games. The first one was fun for about 10 minutes for me, and the second one looks pants based on the review above. (thanks Sheik)

    Great thread btw.
