You started in the wrong place. You can start at the very top - the rightmost crate in your screenshot - then sprint fron crate to crate, even if the gap seems huge.

If you aim for the ropes, you won't overshoot - as you'll hit the hook & stop

You need to get onto the rail above your head, you shouldn't drop down onto that box.

Yeah, like Hexeh said, go past security room at the very top and there is a crate there. Jump on the crate and go from there on top of the suspended cargo crates, all the jumps you just can run / jump to get across and work your way down to the exit.

I have just reached the radioactive pools, had to knock the difficulty down on the previous section with all the military, they do way to much damage quickly and take very little damage back. I believe I am heading now towards the tentacle monster after this current bit, should be pretty cool.

Re: Free updated version of Half-Life/Black Mesa Is Coming/Allen's Super-fun Extravag

I am now completely stuck and can't see where to go.

Snuck past the Tentacle Monster, blown open the wooden door on the left side of the pit 1 level up from the base, worked my way through and down into the fan, activated the fan and got back out the pit. However, I can't get back as ladder is up to high and all the doors in the fan area are locked tight.

There appears to be no way out of this area once you are in it

I haven't got that far yet I'm afraid.
How do I reach this ladder ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Literally run (sprint) and jump keeping hold of the forward key to grab and start climbing up the ladder.

the bit phage is on in that screenshot, what do you do with all the scientists? i had 2 scientists and 3 guards at that point collected from the level. felt bad leaving them there.

and ferral - that big fan (im alt tabbed out the game just past that point now) ride the air upwards and go in the vent thats at your level. then back to the pit. then down 1 level again, run jump across the wider hole above the green goo. then onto the power gennerator area. then back to pit and blast that rocket from the control room.

Ferral, you have to run for the ladder ASAP when you start the fan, then jump into the updraft.

Yeah, the original you could see a dome roof with boards you could smash I remembered, this though you can't see that far up! Now cooked the Tentacle Monster and just got through the glowing green toxic area which was a bit easier to do I found this time round. Just got into the next area where the pipe collapses and military are up ahead.....

Really agree with this. The military kill you very fast and the sub-machine gun can't be aimed with iron sights ! Seems to take a half-clip to kill anything anyway.
I've been sneaking about with the 44 magnum. It's the only way.

Very much enjoying this, only playing it on 'Normal' and the military guys are pretty hard... took me a while at the beginning to figure out that the flares were for torching the zombies, I just had a glock from my dead Barney friend and liberal use of the shift key

I'm up to On A Rail chapter, enjoying the tweaks that the source engine has allowed (physics-y stuff), and the game looks great and run pretty well on my laptop (Intel 4000 gfx FTW)... Died so many times in Blast Pit... tricky tricky

Re: Free updated version of Half-Life/Black Mesa [Contains SPOILERS]

that was shorter than i remember it. theres a few spots where it severely lagged, couple of crashes. cant wait for new improved xen in another decade when its finished

the new dialogue from sciencey, barney and other guys is interesting, just make sure to sneak up on them or not kill them too quickly.

anyone else using the sentry guns against the military? just pick them up and point

    __________

if you know the background story - black mesa, aperture science, both working on portals. black mesa went through to other world, got some crystals, gordon freeman is research sciuentist who places one of those crystals in a big machine thing to test structure..

then the following screenshot shows wheatley, bouncy legs and psychopathic computer have more portable portal guns

    this is the original

    graphics have improved slightly

Yeah I liked that ability, they don't hold many rounds though!

I'm acting on hard and everything seems to die quicker than I'd expect, the military are overpowered though, a couple of shots and you're dead. As someone mentioned the 357 is the weapon of choice.
