    Converting To Mouse And Keyboard?

Being a console gamer in the past, I have tried to convert to PC before with no success. However, I hardly game any more so have thought of getting rid of the console and just add a gfx card to my PC for the odd times I want to. I've never got on with mouse and keyboard though especially as I would never game from a desk. Always on the sofa in front of the tv. Anyone game on PC like this? Especially anyone who is used to consoles. Is it doable? Is console better for sofa gaming?

Re: Converting To Mouse And Keyboard?

My nephew grew up as a console gamer and he found it easier to switch from playing on console to playing on PC then I did going from PC to console. Also it's not just the controls but you won't believe the difference in visual quality, my nephew couldn't believe how good the graphics on his PC were compared to his console, getting a full 1080p with textures and tessellation made such a big difference to the gaming experience for him.

Re: Converting To Mouse And Keyboard?

Sofa really doesn't suit KB/mouse combo. I often have the keyboard in my lap even at a desk, but you really want a solid surface for your mouse for gaming, as it's all about precision.

An option worth considering would be a wired xbox360 controller. I use one for quite a few PC games. Just plugs into a USB, most games come with built in support for it, if not it's just a case of spending 2 mins in the options setting it up.

Also worth remembering a lot perhaps even most of your gaming skill is muscle memory. If you've mainly played console games and switch over to a mouse it's going to take you a while to adjust and reach similar skill levels. No way around that.

Re: Converting To Mouse And Keyboard?

Unless you're going to start gaming at a desk, I don't think there's any point.

PC is far better than console gaming IMO, but not for what you're planning.

I already have a wired 360 controller as a spare for my 360. Surely I would get spanked on fps games though. I don't play much fps though so not a huge issue. More FIFA and arcade games. The odd bit of BF3 maybe.

It's not ideal at all for FPS(unless you're flying then it's great), but for FIFA and arcade games it'll be perfect.

That was meant to be arcade racing games. I might also try Guild Wars 2. Does that support gamepad? And Diablo 3.

Re: Converting To Mouse And Keyboard?

For racing games it'll be far better than any keyboard/mouse. Just as a mouse suits FPS a pad suits racers. Can't help on GW2 sorry, don't play it, pretty sure D3 was out on xbox, if it's out on xbox plug and play compatibility is almost guaranteed. RPG's with a mouse on the sofa will probably be fine as it's more about timing(or spamming left click) than aim in my experience, with the caveat that my experience doesn't include those 2 games.

EDIT: D3 is getting a port but hasn't yet apparently.

There is no D3 on xbox.

I've just thought of one fps I do want to try. Dayz. That might be a problem although I have a vague impression that Arma supports the 360 controller.

Re: Converting To Mouse And Keyboard?

I understand that D3 is due for a release sometime in the future on consoles, though no date has been given as far as I know, however I'm not really sure how the controls would work using a gamepad. Anyone remember trying the original Diablo on the PS1? It was absolutely awful! As for games like Guild Wars, WOW and other MMO RPG's, mouse and keyboard is essential.

Re: Converting To Mouse And Keyboard?

I use a mouse and keyboard for everything bar racing games and sports games. I went from keyboard and mouse playing CoD 4 to Xbox 360 and back to PC again and there's just no contest IMO. Battlefield 3 PC > Xbox 360 every.damn.time.

That's true for many games, but there are some games that don't offer controller support, I think CoD:MW3 was one such game.

Re: Converting To Mouse And Keyboard?

I think over time you can get used to anything.

I play nothing but PC games. But I know of some who play only consoles as you say, lazed back comfortably in the sofa. Some of these people play some on the edge PC games too. I think it's based on time invested. Perhaps pick up a game you're really excited to play, by default you may spend enough time on it to grind out the transition from one to the other.

I remember I had one friend in college who just had a monitor on the bed side table with the tower under it.. over the top? genius? who knows.
