    Beginners guide...

Is there somewhere on the net that will give me a nice easy guide to how to fly in il2, ie when to change prop angle and radiators etc? I can usually keep the plane in the air but a little knowledge may improve my flying!

    Thanks.

    menthel.....here goes.

Radiators slow you down but cool the engine. The faster you are going through the air the better they work..hence a slow climb heats up the engine but a fast dive cools it.
Most VEF fighters go to Rads of about 4 almost immediatley if climbing.

ONE THING..in an IL2 close your Rads over FLAK...it helps keep the engine safe

Prop pitch.....100% is like 1st gear on a bike....
    95% is like second etc....
ie the LOWER the number the more the prop "bites" into the air. SO on take off 100% (default) and then as speed imcreases play with it. Once again most VEF'ers go to 95% for most of the time...but as SOON as you dive get the pitch to a lower number to stop the engine spinning too fast.

Also use prop pitxh to slow yourself on approach....if you are gonna overshoot, drop it right down....its like an air brake.

Superchargers.....1 for take off and at about 2000 to 2500 go up to 2...and dont forget to drop to 1 below again. Read the info in the game for better details on each plane

Mixture...100% below 3000, then 80% above it or the engine will "bog down" with un burnded fuel and it will leave a smoke trail across the sky

Most German planes do it all for you...except rads.

Recent Hurricanes and SPits dont have Rads or Mixture

while you are at it....assign MANUAL GEAR UP and MANUAL GEAR DOWN....

I use Cntrl G and Cntrl B and you have to TAP THE KEYS....on an I-16 you have to wind the gear up manually and it takes a lot of tapping

Also...ESSENTIAL INFO: F9 toggles between SNAP TO VIEW and PAN VIEW.

That means use your HAtswitch to look around in either "SNAP TO A CERTAIN VIEW" or "PAN ABOUT A BIT AT A TIME"

Pan gives you lots more movement and its more accurate for "following" a plane as it goes by, BUT it takes practice to get to look straight ahead again when you want to...for THAT REASON lots of people have a button on the joystick assigned to LOOK AHEAD.....its 5 on the number pad by default....

I use the big centre thumb button on my joystick. It is the EASIEST button to hit and the one that gets used the most after I have forgotten which way is forward
