Just messing around the other day with jets at 10,000m and steep dives. I put the ?heinkel funny looking one in a dive and at about 1050 kph there was a big boom. Then there was another as the wings were stripped off and then the engine exploded! Was the first one a sonic boom or a catastrophic failure? By the way the aerodynamic mesherschmitt just went BOOM! at about the same speed.

The sound barrier isn't modelled in IL2 FB, what you experienced was structural failure which happens to all aircraft in the game if they exceed their maximum airspeed by a sufficient amount - the big boom was IL2's way of telling you there was something breaking off your plane

Yep, it does, but for the basis of comparison and measuring it uses it's mean sea level speed of 340.29m/s MSL.

so pretty much the same speed as Tumble can get out of a TB3 backwards
