Does anyone use a game pad?
At the moment I'm pretty happy with my mouse and keyboard setup (will be getting new ones soon) but i was wondering if it was worth getting a controller for some of my games?
I know it depends on which games support a controller - I'll have to check tomorrow.
Would it also work with my PS2 emulator?
Cheers
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
I used a gamepad once for NFS:MW. As I play FPS mainly it isn't required. Also might be useful for games such as FIFA :)
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
Yes it is definitely worth getting one unless you are strictly an FPS or RTS gamer.
For FPS gaming i would stick with Mouse & Keyboard as it is just more precise. The same goes for RTS games obviously (though i doubt many of them even support game pads anyway).
However if you like racing games, simulators, 3rd person games etc then a gamepad is often a more comfortable alternative that will be just fine.
If you like platformer games that require precision of movement for e.g. jumping or moving at variable speeds than a gamepad is almost essential.
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
I use a gamepad for a few games which are not as practical for K&M. I use it to also play PS2 Emulators, so there should be no trouble there as you can configure the controls yourself depending on the emulator. While not all games are compatible with the gamepad, you can use gamepad emulation software such as xpadder or Pinnacle Game Profiler to play pretty much any game.
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
I use a 360 controller for anything that was designed with controllers in mind. So Darksiders, Devil May Cry, GRiD, Jet Set Radio etc.
For any fps games like counter strike and planetside 2, and ARPGs like torchlight that are mouse driven I use keyboard and mouse.
Then there are a few games that it depends on what I am more comfortable with, Awesomenauts was a 360 game but I prefer keyboard and mouse, and on a few third person shooters like gears of war I use a controller.
Emulators, not that I bother with them, would definitely be a controller thing, to get as close to the original experience as possible.
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
I have an Xbox 360 controller for games like Need For Speed, Lego etc
Definitely much better than a keyboard and mouse for those games.
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
Bought an Xbox360 controller abuot a month ago. Tried with Assassin's Creed 2 initially but sitll hated the game even with the controller so gave up on that. Finding it slightly better it Batman Arkham City DLC, but still can't help constantly feeling the game would be better if they sorted the mouse controls to work properly in the first place. Then again, I've not used a controller since PS1 era so I don't find it intuitive.
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
+1 for xbox 360 controller.
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
360 controller here too - its by far the best option for PC and can be used wired or wireless.
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
I've got an old Saitek Rumble pad (P2500) and it's absolutely fantastic for those games that support it. As others have said, 3rd person (over the shoulder) action games work well.
My Saitek came with its own programming software (i.e. you can map controller buttons to keys for games that don't natively support gamepads) and I used X360CE to emulate a 360 controller for Dungeon Seige 3, and that worked pretty well, so I don't think it's necessary to go for a 360 controller. OTOH, I suspect it makes life a lot easier for those games that do natively support it (and no doubt you can get third party programming software to do keymapping off a 360 controller).
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
Yeah i'm currently using the 360 controller for windows also. As i started out as a console gamer it's proven to be very useful to have and for me one of the more comfortable gamepads to hold.
However like i said in my earlier post. For FPS or RTS etc.. Mouse & Keyboard all the way! :D
Re: Does anyone use a game pad?
i use a 360 controller for every game except the few fts games i play

I mostly agree with this, though I've not played Awesomenauts or Gears of War and for games like Binary Domain and Spec Ops: The Line I preferred using my keyboard and mouse, with Sleeping Dogs I kept swapping to my controller for the driving sections and back to the keyboard and mouse for all other parts of the game.
Having the controller gives you more choices so you can play games the way you feel most comfortable.

I agree, I am happy with keyboard and mouse all FPS game for precision shots or sniping but I enjoy playing some games with gamepad although I use a PlayStation 2 controller adapter to USB to play on computer. I usually use it with console games that has been ported to PC games like Phantasy Star Online or FFVII games and games that action type like Rusty Hearts.
