    120hz vs 60hz

im just wondering if its worth keeping my vg236h or just hooking up my pc to my 40 inch 1080p tv into my bedroom im like 2 feet away from my monitor would something that big mounted to me wall get annoying?)(dont get me wrong its awesome and has great colours and deep blacks but i notice no difference between gaming at 60hz and 120hz and i bought it used very cheap as it has a dead pixel which has recently started to annoy the hell out me) thoughts on the problem would be great

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

Well it depends... If you are very competitive and want to make use of every advantage available then 120hz will offer better performance and make a slight difference in split second actions. Bat as you say you don't notice the difference just go with the one that you feel more comfortable using.

120hz is becoming more and more popular while 60hz is (very) slowly being sidelined so the 120hz tv/monitor will be future proof i guess?

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

Depends on the type of game you play, you say you don't notice any difference? I presume your fps is high enough to get the benefit?

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

there's a massive difference between 60 and 120 hertz. Its miles smoother, and once you go back to 60 you can see the difference.

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

120hz can be used for 3D applications using active glasses iirc so would give the option to get into 3D gaming and movies as well

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

Playing a game on a 120hz monitor means nothing unless you set the refresh rate that high and have a decent enough system. It also depends on the type of games you are playing, fast paced games like most first person shooters benefit the most with the higher refresh rate.

There are however, people who see little to no difference even after it is set up correctly, and if you are one of them, go ahead and get rid of it I guess.

I've heard many people say that after you have used 120Hz you will never want to go back. You will need a system that is good enough to actually push 120fps though.

For anyone that says they can't see the difference.. If you have access to a sufficient monitor go and set it to 60hz and drag random windows around the screen. Now switch to 120hz and do the same. The difference is day and night!

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

My monitor, Benq XL2420T DOES 120Hz, and in mainly FPS, Racing games you can notice the differance coming from 60hz/or 75hz. Its seems just faster, Smoother and less strain on the Eyes.
You dont need a Great system for 120hz, Thats not the same as 120Fps Rob.Larby (Thats frames per Second) Where 120hz is the monitor's Refresh rate. You'll notice little details in games you'd never notice before. I play battlefield 3 & need for speed, and for me the differance is very nice indeed. Would I go back, Nope.

Nope, Rob is right. If your computer is still only pushing 60fps then a 120hz monitor won't be any different per se than a 60hz monitor. It can only be smoother or faster if your graphics card is able to supply the extra information.

Now it might also be that 120hz monitors happen to be very low refresh time monitors as well, in which case you might notice a difference, but it's a case of them needing to be low refresh time in order to help get to 120hz, not the other way around, and there's no reason a 60hz monitor couldn't also be just as low refresh time.

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

I have been looking out for a decent lighboost monitor with 1920 x 1200 resolution. I have been told the lightboost makes a big difference but its an nVidia thing only.

Not that I can actually afford to buy one at the moment though!

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

Basically it doesnt matter what game you play or what you do on your pc. 120htz is superiorto 60 every time. I went from 60 to 120 over a year ago and I would never go back.
Less blur and so much smoother.
Only problem with higher refresh rates is you need the horse power to take full advantage. Make sure you have a gpu and cpu to suit.
The other problem you face here is the higer res that you like. Its difficult to find a decent affordable monitor at a higher refresh higher than 1080 res. You could always look at the overlord or catleap but they are just standard monitors with overclocked main boards and prone to failure

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

my pc pushes 120 for the vast majority of games I'm just saying outside of no screen tear and windows (and 3d options but i don't like 3d) i dont notice any super fluidity during gaming (maybe keyboard and mouse gamers do?) i picked an awesome massive panasonic tv/ monitor thing for my consoles (will post model details soon) but im contuning to use the asus vg236h and the stuck pixel is still annoying me from time to time atm im trying to find an identical monitor(without the problem obv) but its tough. This thread was made as i was curious if people feel the difference.

    Re: 120hz vs 60hz

When you say you notice no difference between the 60hz and 120hz screens are you using the same cable when you switch between screens?

As far as I recall a standard DVI-D/I cable has 2 banks of 9 pins in the main cluster with a gap in the middle and a further 4 pins with a bar across the middle of these to one side. The Dual link DVI cables have an additional 6 pins between the two banks of 9 pins and this carries extra picture data, so it might be that if you aren't seeing a difference it's because you're 120hz monitor is missing the data it needs to drive it at 120hz.

Having used one, I am not convinced. Yes, its slighly more fluid but doesnt look any better, doesnt increase my score and requires a lot more grunt to perform optimumly. As for dragging windows around smoother.....I think you need to have money to burn to justify it for that

Perhaps some people are more prone to the motion, hense they rate it so highly but id rather have more eye candy and/or a higher resolution over 120hz any day.
