Farcry 3 was (nearly) ruined by them, Dead Space 3 was ruined by them, and now I can't play Tomb Raider this because of damn QTE's (Because of disability, I can't 'mash' a key repeatedly). What a horrible gameplay mechanism it is too!

Im not a fan of the 'mashing' thing either, it doesnt add anything to the game at all. I would much prefer that you just have to press the button at the right time and it triggered whatever animation it was going to do, even if it was in fairly quick succession to be successful.
Dont some gamepads (and I guess keyboard) have a "Turbo" button which simulates rapid button presses by holding? Certainly a keyboard like the G15 you could macro a key to mash a button.
I didn't mind the QTEs in Tomb Raider, or something like Final Fantasy XIII. I mean of course there is a point where they get ridiculous, but if it would have just been a cut scene anyway for me adding QTE does make it more interactive. Of course an option to turn it off and play as a cut-scene might be good too, especially for reasons like those outlined above.
I loathe them too. I was overjoyed to find a "disable QTE's" option in The Witcher 2(iirc). Utterly pointless mechanic, if I wanted to play DDR I would of bought DDR. Seriously is there a gamer on the planet who likes them? Make it gameplay or don't. Don't try to hide the limits of your game engine with them, which is all they're for really.
i really dont know why people hate them? maybe because i play with a controller but i think they are really cool
It's just not really a challenge in the way a game should be, to my mind. You're either quick enough, in which case it's fine but usually painful and irritating, or not quick enough, in which case it's impossible. There's no skill involved whatsoever, and there's virtually always an alternative mechanic that would be more engaging. It's much easier to code though, which I suspect is why it's usually used.
as opposed to just shooting the guy? its changes up the pace and i like them in games like god of war they are just amazing i thought far cry 3 was pretty cool. Is it harder to get right on k and m?
No, easier, it's just not engaging at all. I suppose on a game pad it doesn't detract from the usual flow of what you are doing. On a keyboard it's just downright stupid to go from mashing through loads of keys simultaneously while swinging about wildly with your mouse in normal play to just one or two actions for a QTE.
Yeah, I guess it's pretty normal to mash Circle, Triangle, Square, X for hours on end, but on a keyboard it feels plain daft. Even with a console and gamepad, I still think it's a cop-out though, a substitute for proper gameplay.
Like playing Just Cause 2, you try to hijack a helicopter, and you're grabbing onto the pilot, but rather than say punching, blocking and dodging, you just press number keys 1-4 in the order they appear on the screen. In what way that's supposed to be a good idea, I cannot even begin to imagine.
imho it makes the game feel more cinematic and it allows the devs to do some cool stuff. I mean how much gameplay are you losing out on? it was something different after the hordes of people you essentially barbecued, squewered or just gunned down? would you have preferred to them to just have given him loads of health and you wear him down in a hail of bullets? in god of war once you take out most of the health normally it goes into qte where you finish off any boss in the most awesome way. For just cause yh it was a little annoying but nothing beyond that
I think you are missing what we are saying.
There is no problem with cool animations for a kill or a defensive maneuver etc, but having to sit there mashing a single button or a short combination of buttons to make that happen just feels awkward on a mouse and keyboard. As other people have said, it feels like a bit of a cop out rather than them trying to integrate the procedure into the normal game mechanics it just takes over in this preschool type 'press the w key now' way... What you are basically doing is just pressing different 'play animation' buttons. If they put the time in and put lots of different possibilities instead of just correct and incorrect then great, this is rarely the case.
Maybe you feel differently about it than i, but to me when these things happen i tend to disengage from the game.
I quite like them, even though they remind me of a time of broken games! (Dragons Lair, Space Ace etc)
I find it hard to understand complaining about them in DS3 though, I am on my 3rd play through and I haven't had many of them at all!
