    pc tool kits

hi for the last year or so ive started building my own pcs etc and have been using whatever tools i have lying around, which have been random screwdrivers and sometimes knives for smaller screws(a lil ghetto i know). I am now looking for some kind of tool kit with a case akin to http://www.ifixit.com/Tools/Pro-Tech...t=product_link but available in the uk. Ideally id like to spend no more than 40 quid at most but if there is something good i dont mind. Thanks in advance.

I have one of these, granted mine is around 10 year old now :

    http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/...roducts_id=792

Never needed anything more either, it has all the different screw heads you could possibly need in there as well as the smaller electronics screwdrivers. Ideal and small set that is easy to carry about.

Something a bit different with a few extra bits :

    Re: pc tool kits

Thanks it looks like a nice kit and surprisingly cheap too btw do you think i should buy one of those anti static wrist things? i handled all of my pc parts without one and nothing bad has happened yet. I wasn't exactly touching the gold parts of the gpu or anything but is it something to worry about?

    Re: pc tool kits

I have never used one in the past and the components are a lot more hardy than they used to be. You can get an anti stat for next to nothing so you may as well grab one just to be safe if you are working on a friends machine. You never know when a carpet is going to strike and make you all static!

I have only ever used about 4 of the heads in the set, the long nose pliers for jumpers if the board is already fitted to the case and one of the ratchet style heads to attach the motherboard mounts to the case. Its a bit pointless getting a huge set when you will never really need half the bits in it.

    Re: pc tool kits

For building a pc, the only tool you should need is a philips number2 head screw driver. I'd advise a good long shaft one not the multiple head type as some times you need to get into hard the reach places.

If you're doing things like taking apart laptops or replacing graphics card stock coolers then you need smaller cross point screw drivers, so a 2nd screw driver with changeable heads is good.
Also good for servers and some pre-built computers is a set of star shaped torque bits
Flat bladed screw drivers are generally not that useful except as pry bars.

    other useful tools are:
wire cutters (better than scissors for cutting cable ties)
A set of jewellers screw drivers (you generally cannot get heads as small as these, also the flat ones are good for prying open plastic cases)
A little handy grab thingy is good to pick up dropped screws eg

I have to admit, when I drop a screw and can't find it, I pick the whole case up, and shake it with one side tilted to bring the screw to me.

    Re: pc tool kits

+1 for the handy grabby thingy.

I'd also suggest magnetised screwdrivers. Holding a tiny screw in place is akward as hell in a tight system!

Edit: I got my kit free when I subscribed to Custom PC 8ish years ago. Check around and see if any of your regular magazines are offering anything... that way its win/win.

    Re: pc tool kits

I've done the upside down shake thing too problem comes when you have other lose bits, granted lose bits are a more common issue on laptop or projector repair than pc's, but you don't want to turn something over if more than the screw will fall out.

The grab is also hand if you don't have magnetic screwdrivers or they've lost their magnetism, you can use the grab to put a screw in, not all the way but enough to start it so it will stay put so you can get a screwdriver to it.

to magnetize a screwdriver though, just take apart a dead hdd and use the magnets. I used to have like 5 clumped all together with my screwdrivers in a drawer.
