Steam Trading Card thingy - good, bad, indifferent?
Got a couple of spare Beta 'keys' in case anyone is interested (though I imagine they're plentiful). Not 100% sure if it's a good idea or not, I'm not a trader and never got into the TF2 hat craze
Edit: Damn, I shoulda put 'Not sure yet' or something as a Poll option, which is what I would've chosen. D'oh.

I don't get the drop rate limit thing.
Surely it's impossible to complete a game's cards without spending money, or playing unrelated games you don't care about to trade their cards?

Re: Steam Trading Card thingy - good, bad, indifferent?
Personally, I find it a bit tiresome. I think sometimes projects can forget what their core value is.
I remember when Xfire was a great tool - it did two things. One, it showed your friends what game you were playing and which server you were on, and two, it enabled you to communicate with them. Then we got overlays, screenshots, videos, all sorts of nonsense. I'm sure some people wanted them, and that's fine, but they got in the way of everything else, and made the software incredibly clunky.
With Steam, all I want it to do is to run games. Some tools are nice, like the saved game backup function, but they're ones that relate directly to the act of playing games. The more fluff that appears around the edges, from hats, to cards, to screenshots, to overlays, to recommendations, to achievements, and so on, the more fed up I get. As long as it minds its own business, that's absolutely fine, and thankfully so far it more or less has. You can make your profile private, opt out of signing into the community, disable the overlay, disable pop-ups, and it's a pretty clean system - but I am concerned about the long-run. You read about Greenlight devs complaining about the lack of publicity, and you wonder how long it will be before all the junk starts to rival the games in terms of duration.

Natural evolution of achievements?

Done. I would normally be very reluctant to amend a poll once running, but as there were only 4 votes, I've added your extra option.
If anyone that's already voted (erudito, bagnaj, Legan, Snooty) wants their vote changed let me know .... though I can only amend totals, not individual votes).

Re: Steam Trading Card thingy - good, bad, indifferent?
Never been into the trading card systems that many companies/games seem to be adding these days. Steam should really either try to stay as streamlined as possible, or optimise better so the system loads quicker. I don't know if everyone has this but going to the store, community and profile windows all take a very long time to load, so I generally avoid doing any of the extra bloatware provided

Voted "Don't give a FSM", as I don't give a FSM about Steam and won't use it, never mind trading cards. If I did use Steam, my vote would be the same.

And that's part of why I won't use it. By no means the only part, but part. It's that once you've handed over your money, they can move the goalposts, and not necessarily in a way I'd like, so I won't give them my money in the first place.

And that's roughtly what I think too. If I had half a care about anything outside downloading and launching games it would be things like:
* Allow subfolders - for the games categories
* Stop the install of DirectX et al, each time I install a game.
Ie, the two things that a) slow me installing a game, and b) slow me finding it to play it next time.
This card thing - Nah, not even remotely interested.

Not sure anything can be done about the DirectX thingy? :undecided Not by Valve anyhoo (though if MS haven't found a better way of doing it by now I guess there's little chance of a change there)...
Regarding the Trading Card thingy, my impression is that it has come out of the blue for most people (unless they're real fanboys who follow all the beta gossip). Unfortunately I have a Steam friend who just *loves* this sort of err.. well it's fluff really isn't it? If I get a TF2 hat for some unknown reason (they seem to think giving these out with other game purchases a plus point ) I just give it to him. And I store about 100 of his 'Mann Crates', 'cos his inventories are full (yes he has more than one account)...
A strange virtual economy has evolved regarding Steam, who knows where it'll end up...

The risk is .... in tears, like one of those disreputable Christmas savings clubs that collapsed and took lots of people's savings with them.

The friend I mentioned has already been 'scammed' numerous times and his account hijacked (he clicked on an innocent-looking trading link and filled in his details on an official-looking site:eek:). Fact is, his hundreds of 'Mann' crates are practically worthless; I just don't see the effort vs. reward value working out. Bit like the 'grinding' involved with MMORPGs.
At least with Bitcoins you don't have to actually do anything
PS I don't mine Bitcoins & that'd b a topic for another discussion but I do find it quite interesting re: new economics, fiat money, government control of money supply etc...

Re: Steam Trading Card thingy - good, bad, indifferent?
I don't mind it i think it adds re playability to games that you've played. I'm a achievement hunter when i want to be =)

Or multiple categories for one game. Or syncing categories across installs.

The problem with that one is there are about 50 versions of DirectX, and a game will only run if you have the exact correct version installed. The safest way to guarantee this is to install the version that game was built against.

Re: Steam Trading Card thingy - good, bad, indifferent?
Take my money Value! TAKE IT ALL!!!
I'm a sucker for stuff that includes experience and collecting things, at the moment its a bit limited on the way to get cards but as it expands I can see it getting much much better.
Oh and on that note add me if you want guys: doomie@f2s.com --- old school account (f2s doesn't even exist dammit) however it doesn't seem to allow people to add me via nickname.
