Best PC games at the moment.

Portal 1 & 2 will run great on a low spec machine, and they're essential. Gunpoint is a great cheap puzzle game that won't tax your system, with a really fresh take on stealth, hacking and humour.

I'm not sure if you mean "at the moment" as in new games or just currently available games, so I'm not sure how old the recommendations should be.

Dishonored was great last year, and it's very cheap now on disc from Amazon or by DD from online digital services. The new single-player DLC expansion gives you some new environments and a different character. It ran better than fine on my GTX280, so I'm sure it'll be fine on your system too.

The total war series of games are awesome also grid 1 and 2 if you like racing theres always the crysis games if you have the horsepower and if you haven't played half life2 that's pretty much compulsory for a pc gamer so is every fallout game. =-)

i just recently played HL2 for the first time , all I can say is what a game.

Its almost like playing 2-3 other games combined into one ,and defintely the most fun I had in years in a game.

It starts off slow but really kicks into gear once your trying to make it to that rebel base .

I almost gave up because I thought it was just going to be a FPS grinder through some mildy dystopian urban terrain ( bit like Fear etc ) but without the dark edge to it.

heh , true its actually EP2 I've been playing , though Ive taken a break for a few wks because I actually almost played non stop for a good 40 hours at least.

The main thing that hit me too was how well the graphics stand up to anything now ( kinda sad to say ) but for all the so called improvements i actually prefer the older more textured , bleaker look than smooth almost Disney feel I see in all these new games.

That Ravens place was exceptionally fun to play , it wasnt even that big an area but just designed so well so it actually made you more curious the deeper you went , a lot like the American MacGees Alice. ( another great game )

If you are happy to go a little old school then...

Half-life and KOTOR are pretty safe choices first person choices - they were the first games that really strung me into the story. Half life 2 was a solid follow up. Other notible mentions here would be Deus Ex, Max Payne, Splinter Cell, Mass effect and the newer Batman Arkham Asylum.
For charecter building adventure games the Elder scroll series is also pretty awesome - I started with oblivion and then skyrim, but the older ones are apparantly great classics. Diablo, although 3rd person, warrant a meantion here too.
If you are after a scare then Bioshock is pretty good at keeping your nerves on the edge, especially if played in the dark and in an empty house!
As for strategy games, Ages of the Empire was the first game to make me feel like a god . I really enjoyed the original Starcraft and Warcraft III. Notable mentions here include Black and White, Baldurs gate and the Civ series
As for multiplayer online games I liked Counter strike for team play and Unreal Tournament for no hold bars fast paced headshot action!
Want to give your brain a workout? Give Portal and Portal 2 a shot - good puzzles and great dialogue.

I still don't know what the OP means by "low spec", but yes, that will play on all but the most ancient of PCs, and you're right, it's a classic!

Also I just played Bioshock Infinite on my new GTX 650 Ti, and it plays perfectly at 1080p in DX11 (well, technically 1200p since I have a 16:9 screen). It is the best story of any game I've played this year - come to that, the best story of anything I've seen this year in any medium. I would strongly advise the OP to play the first Bioshock prior to Infinite, since you'll get a better experience that way - trust me on this So many delightful little touches in this.

Both Witcher games are fantastic but the second one is by far the best

I'm currently addicted to Civilization 5 and hoping to get the new expansion pack soon.

I also play a bit of Age of Empires II, Dota 2 & Faster Than Light.
