Hi guys
I was looking at installing GTA4 again on my next build. I remember reading in forums there were issues about not being able to run the game with high settings, when it first came out. So that was back then. Can this game now be maxed out on the latest gaming rigs (GTX770, i7, plenty of memory etc)

I had a go with it recently and it still felt clunky on my PC at full settings (GTX 570 and 4.5GHz i5).
It could have been running with high FPS - I never checked - but it certainly felt dodgy.
I'd love to know whether this is the case too as I've heard that the port was very poorly done and if it still doesn't run brilliantly then I think that would be the case.
It's a shame because Rockstar did such a great job on the PC version of Max Payne 3, I mean it was gorgeous and ran superbly on my GTX 285!
Well... My Build can play this game on Very-High(Max) on all settings that allow it to go up to that an I get 45+ FPS EVERYWHERE. I have a 7970 which is a little more powerfull than your 770 but you should be able to do High at least and get 40+ FPS
With the latest gaming rigs, definitely. It isn't the best of optimized games, but it can definitely be played at a very high/max settings with a smooth experience with the top stuff now.
For some reason I got 30-80FPS on my 670. Changing the settings didn't seem to have an effect apart from the gpu load from the AF
I get 30-60fps (usually 40+) on a 6970. For the most part it seems smooth but flying at high speed there is a noticeable juddering (even though fps is fine) like it keeps dropping frames.
I would recommend forcing MLAA (for AMD) or FXAA (for Nvidia) to smooth out the jaggies (especially if you have anisotropic filtering on x16).
Are you getting minimal settings? 800x600 - and the message saying to lower the game spec as your system may not be able to handle it?
If so this problem is a problem with GTA and recognising cards over 2GB. For Steam installation click the games properties and go to 'Set Launch Options' and then paste into that ' -nomemrestrict -norestrictions'

I've seen countless people complain about poor performance and bugs on their new high(ish)end systems.. most of the time, they were still on the release version (1.0.0.0), ignoring the seven (?) patches and update nagscreens that followed "because I don't play multiplayer anyway".
For modding, I recommend 1.0.3.0 or 1.0.4.0. If you want multiplayer, there's no choice but to go for the last patch (1.0.7.0). That one is rather modding-unfriendly though (and visual mods like ENB will have the "red sky" bug, which doesn't happen with the older game versions)
Better not use -norestrictions. Causes multiple problems. Try "-availablevidmem x" instead to get rid of the limitationsQuote:

I didn't come across -availablevidmem x whilst trying to sort this problem. I never had any problems with -nomemrestrict but if people have then fair enough. What kind of problems have occurred?
GTA IV is a total mystery tbh. My GTX280 ran it well on high settings at 1920x1200 when the game was first released, while other people with much better machines were plagued with crashes. Subsequent patches improved things even further. GTA IV:EFLC ran fine too, maybe even a little better than the main game. They seemed to have improved the code a little in the expansions.
Later, having uninstalled the series for some time, I thought I'd reinstall it... and the main game ran terribly, with a completely unplayable framerate akin to a flicker book. This makes no sense at all, and I still have absolutely no idea what can possibly have gone wrong. It was fully patched, and there's no logical reason why a game that once ran fine should be terrible on a later install. As you can see from this thread, people with excellent 2013 hardware are still having a hard time with it. So really, it's like the whole thing is a lottery.

A 770 with an i7 and 8GB ram will max GTX4 out no problem, the only problem you might have is if you start modding it.
Yeah. I know that gta is quite cpu intensive, but I don't think an i7 performs that much better than an i5.
A 770 should be similar to a 680 which is similar to an over clocked 670...
