I think I want to get back into an MMO...

As odd as this sounds, I miss WoW. I miss the initial love I had for the game, and I miss everything about the game from vanilla through to TBC (personally I believe the game went downhill after TBC, but that's another story) and I miss being in a decent guild and raiding. I recently tried to get back into it but I just can't be bothered to start a new character and the characters I did get to 85 seem to be really different to how I remember them and I need to take a bit of time to set up the key bindings and learn how to play them again.

Since WoW I have tried plenty of other MMO's but none have captured the initial love I had for WoW. Here's a list of a few I have tried:

SW:ToR (love the story lines, love light sabers, some how never got far past level 30 and PvP was a joke)
Rift (OK story, like the play style, didn't like grouping)
LotRO (Never really got out of the beginner areas, didn't play as well as I thought)
EVE Online (I still to this day love this game, but despite resubscribing every 6 months or so I can never seem to get back into it no matter how much I want to, perhaps I miss not being in a corp)
The Secret World (Didn't really enjoy the lack of levelling)
Guild Wars 2 (Amazing game, but I missed the lack of trinity)
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (So long ago now, I can't recall much about this... is it still about?)
TERA (Amazing combat, bit of a grind otherwise, and had no idea if I was playing on EU or US servers, lol)
DCUO (Love DC Comics, hit 30 very quickly, not much else to do without a group and most seemed quite elitist at the time I played so couldn't do anything but failing randoms)

I think out of the above I enjoyed Rift the most. But I really would love to get back into WoW (as odd as it sounds) as I actually liked the whole trinity that other games try to avoid (GW2 for example). So I guess I am asking, is it worth me trying to get back into WoW? Do any people here still play regularly and can advise me of a decent server or guild to check out? Failing that, do you play any of the other MMORPG's listed and think it would be worth me checking them out again? Most I haven't played for quite some time, remember that.

Other MMO's I play include World of Tanks and Defiance, but they are not in the same league as the MMORPG's I listed above, great for jumping in and out of casual games but not regularly.

Re: I think I want to get back into an MMO...

have you tried Dungeons and Dragons : neverwinter yet?

theres currently 3 servers, although my sister says they are planning to reduce that to 1, so you wont go for hours on end not meeting anyone. plenty of content and theres the foundry. user built mini dungeon content, so if you want a small dungeon with 40 dragons in it, just build it in the foundry and off you go

LOTRO is the other one me and my sister play a lot, it seems to be mainly endgame content at the moment, since they scaled a lot of things from level 40 or so up to 85, no-one ever plays them at minimum level anymore because all the deeds/quests don't work until lvl cap, so its been ruined by that. helms deep is out near the end of the year, they are changing the way every class gets skills, how they play and so on.

but you can earn pretty much everything ingame via the TP system, although then you run into whats known as the grind.
you mainly get 5 or 10 TPs per deed done (kill 30 spiders in bree, kill 120 orcs in rivendell kind of thing) but adding up what ive earned ingame from grinding comes to roundabout 20,000 TPs. so quite a bit of grinding done there. and I have 2 accounts, so ive had to do that on both

out of the 2, I would go neverwinter.

Re: I think I want to get back into an MMO...

Neverwinter sounds like it's worth a play for a while, but will depend on player content for longevity.

There's also TES online coming, which again sounds like it's going to be quite good, if not something amazingly different.

Like you I miss having an MMO to get stuck into. It sounds strange but I miss having the time sink when bored and nothing I try quite grabs me like WoW did for 5? years... maybe I've just grown up / become more jaded?

Currently enjoying GW2 however none of the classes sit with me 100% so I find myself being more altoholic than usual and switching around a lot.

Perhaps they just ruined it. The irony of adding an achievement tracking system, and them making most stuff so easy it doesn't feel like an achievement.

In the end there will just be a big button in Stormwind marked "push here for 1 level + 1000g". OFC, but even then some would QQ that the one in Orgrimmar gave 2 levels and 2000g "because Blizzard are biassed" without bothering to roll a hordie character to try it.

I miss it, but part of me thinks I should have got out earlier and with fonder memories.

Re: I think I want to get back into an MMO...

I'm in a similar position. I wanna start an MMO and am seriously considering GW2, but the thing that puts me off is the apparant lack of endgame content.

2013 has some awesome MMO's coming out though; the two that I'm really looking forward to are Elder Scrolls Online and Archeage.

Going to give Neverwinter a go tonight or next week, might capture my attention for a few hours if I'm lucky.

With everquest next around the corner, you can always try and have a go at Everquest2 which is now I believe free to play. They have changed it since I first played, but even the island starter zone used to be an epic way to start the game! Not as flashy these days, but still a solid game to try.

TERA (Amazing combat, bit of a grind otherwise, and had no idea if I was playing on EU or US servers, lol)

I just tried NW last night and found it drag , uninspiring cliche
    POE the same
    WOT the same
DrakensangOnline fun up to level 15 now a grind
Age of Conan liked back in the day but no community
KOTOR or Planetside 2 was next on my list
Liked the idea of secret world but don't want to pay and find out its crap
Bought COH2 for online play and found out there never any one in the lobby 2 play lol
My vote for best online game , and game id most likely go back to was RUSE from 3 yrs ago or Supreme Commander

So far not impressed at all , most fun I had was my 2 days with Drakensang but the rest is more depressing than anything else because 5 mins in a game like NW and its might as well be anything from 8 yrs ago ( or that's how it feels ) and looks.

WOW was an original , ahead of it times back in the day that's why it worked and why nothing works now.. The whole mechanics of making an mmorpg more like a tabletop roleplay isn't even off 1st base , instead we are given different themed stories or little gimmicks hope of compensating for what is essentially just a clone of WOW.

Forget new GPUs , they should be focusing on upgrading the gaming mechanics and trying to change the whole philosophy of what makes PC gaming great instead of using it like some tarty PS3 to compete.

Improve the quality and the rest will follow , and leave the big budget let downs to the consoles , PC games used to be more the thinking man games, and I still think theres big market for that .

"WOW was an original , ahead of it times back in the day that's why it worked and why nothing works now"

Hmm, hardly ahead of it's time, but it was an origional AND they got their business model right, allowing people without a credit/debit card to play their game and yet still continuously give them money. Plenty of other games were origional and plenty of others were well ahead of wow in terms of "ahead of the times".

Re: I think I want to get back into an MMO...

    resurrecting the thread a bit..

but i am the same postition as you are/were. eventually i just started WoW again. it's still good, just different to the old days. i have played every class at max level at some point in the game bar one - Monk - so i made one, on a new server (dreanor is well over populated 1000+ queues at peak time, and all my mates left ages ago) i joined the first lvl25 guild i was invited too and just started playing. i'm somewhere around 20hours played and am level 60. enjoyed it so far, they have changed a lot of the lowbie zones to make it more user friendly and added bits that kept my interested for a while. may well get bored again but there does seem like a lot to do, lots of dungeons and raiding, or pvp. just got to remember its the same game, just different!
