RAF Cosford

I went there on Saturday... they have got so many lovely lovely aircraft there... Bristol 188, Hawker Hind (sans crappy beige bombs ;)), Avro Vulcan, Handley-Paige Victor (this one was outside, in primer, and covers in the intakes... flying???), Spit I, Hurri IIC, TSR2 and loads more that are very special spread over 3 hangars... they have an engine unit from a Heinkel 177 - 2 inverted V12's, geared onto a common prop shaft, with each engine boasting a turbo charger the size of your head.... and the nose section of a Vulcan, that you can go inside :) see where the pilots and crew sat :)

There's also a kiddie's section with lots of hands-on experiments, explaining the rudiments of flight, lift and how wings work and stuff :)


Best bit of all is, admission is FREE... well worth a trip up to Shropshire for :)

Tell ya what.. tho Vulcan cockpit is awesome.... such dainty little throttle levers for such BIIIIG engines :D

been cosford twice but nowt to do with flying / etc the RAF sponsor the basketball league i play in and the finals are there.

Sadly not. It was phased out back in 1993 when converted VC-10s took the refuelling baton. I very much doubt the RAF will have bothered to keep one fully airworthy, too expensive and not much of a draw at airshows (after all they couldn't be arsed to keep the last airworthy Vulcan up and running - and that was a major airshow draw - also grounded 1993).

I have never seen a Vulcan in flight. I so hope it happens. It will be Awesome. I never got to see Concorde either. I was really miffed when they said it wasn't going to do an airshow circuit.

Lived most of my life under concordes flight path nr Reading :) Felt a tear in my eye last time i saw her :shocked2:

I saw the Vulcan at Conningsby in the late 80s early 90s a few times :rockon: Such a plane. Can I recommend Sky Warriors by Alfred Price for the full story of the Falklands Bombs run, its amazing UK to Falklands to bomb a runway :eek:
