Volgarr the Viking

Anyone else got this one yet?

I got it from GOG today and it is also available on Steam.

Simply put....AWESOME!!

It looks like a game from the 16 bit Amiga, ST, Megadrive & SNES

Plays just like Rastan Saga from the arcades and conversions on the 8Bits (C64 (Ugh horrendous version! ), Spectrum, Master System & DOS (DOS version is way to fast)

Its a completely hard core platform game and you die a lot. However, each time you die you learn where something is as it is placed in exactly the same way each time. The bosses are absolutely huge and take time, you run in, hit a few times then back off for their attack. You literally get 1 life to complete the level, however (another however!! ), you collect a shield, then a helmet and finally a flaming sword and there is always a hidden what looks like Thor's Hammer on each level, you have to search and find the hammer though, its well hidden.

If you get hit it takes an item off you until all you have is your sword, get hit again without a shield and its death and back to the start of the level.

Its hard but its fair.

Platforming you can jump or double jump, you have to think though before jumping as there is no control over your jump, once the jump is made there is no turning back, while double jumping he spins in the air and his sword spins like a lethal gyroscope. You also have spears for ranged attacks which can be charged once you have the blue metal shield for a more powerful attack which travels through all enemies in a line onscreen, it also doubles up as a platform when it hits the wall that can be jumped on to reach higher places.

If you like old school gaming and platformers you need to get this game, even though you die a fair bit whilst learning and memorising a level you just can't put it down, it doesn't get you angry like the Souls games either!
