There's been a lot of whining about people wanting Newtonian physics, not realising that most of the games they've played already were being Newtonian. SC merely adds a whole lot more of it into the mix as well... but with this, I'm also sat here wondering how long it's going to take me just to get out of my flippin' hangar, too. I'm all for realism, but I haven't had to sit down and study a manual in depth before even playing since the days of owning a Spectrum!!

It's going to take a LOT of practice just to fly a freighter from A to B, I think...
I doubt it. It'll be like a normal space combat game with what seem like slightly odd/sluggish turn rates for the most part, which almost everyone should be able to just pick up and go with. Then there's optionally some tricks you can do that take advantage of extra practise/control systems.

The problem is if neither of the modes feels *fun* then flying becomes more of a chore than a joy, and that'll kill the game. It might be 'realistic' (though if you're going to the effort of realistic space stuff then you don't design ships that look like these ones do!) but flying the space shuttle isn't exactly a joy ride.

(incidentally, does anyone remember the space shuttle simulator? Kind of fun for a bit, but not something I'd want to be dogfighting in!) Thing is, space shuttle had dedicated controls for translational thrusters, where as no-one makes them for home PCs (imagine something more like a gearstick on a car, with the ability to pull up as well as push down).

I-War 2 had an accurate flight model, but even dumbed down it wasn't very fun.

yeh s42 is basically a story based training program for the persistent universe, as far as i'm aware.. i'm looking forward to the co-op stuff with that as well

and yeh. i just posted that video for those who haven't seen it yet. it clears a lot of stuff up

i honestly feel like i can just chill about the flight model now. mainly because i know where it's going now. i think i already understood it pretty well. but i was just concerned about how much fun it would be in the end. i do love the way it's all being calculated in real time via the physics engine, rather than each ship just being a result of pre adjusted parameters. so it's not like they decided to make yaw more dominant than banking and turning or anything. but that's just how it works when you simulate space flight i guess.. still, when they have done all the things that they've talked about, it's going to be a pretty skilled game i think. we're gonna have to play it for a while to get good at it - there's no way out of this!

Yeah, go onto YouTube and search for "Continual Explosions" and "Crash Back To Menu"... That's about all I've managed to get out of it so far!!

I registered early enough to get a Golden Ticket (which just means I eventually get a custom ship skin, or somesuch), although real life issues meant I didn't get to pledge until about 18 months ago, I think... and even then I only got a basic package (Aurora and 300i). Not enough to earn me my own Hornet demo.

Well it looks like they're trying to simulate the aspect of my ships being built by the cheapest military contractor going, as the bloody things just do not work... so yeah, I suppose that's realistic...

Just been asked by someone how well their Phenom II 965BE with 7770 graphics will run this. He seems to think a GPU upgrade will be at least required, any guesses?

Talk of realistic physics really puts me off on something like this. We don't have interstellar drive, so we don't know what is realistic. We do know what makes a good story and a good game. A 1000G turn should be quite possible, unless of course you are in combat, have taken a hit and hear an announcement "Inertial dampers offline", then you have limited options and good reason to panic

Way too early to say. More optimisation will come at the end when they've got the assets and scenes all set up. Wait until the game is much nearer release to even think about upgrading.

I would wait until beta comes out, even the alpha atm is not a true indication of what the game will be like when it's finished. But it does look like a potential winner.

That setup will struggle, painfully. And I feel 100% positive I can confirm that right now, even though we're in pre Alpha. Let's just take a look at a game like Crysis 3 - imagine running that game with that setup. Yeh, SC will be even more power hungry.. We don't know exactly what will be required for which settings at which framerates right now. But I would bet my life on a terrible experience with that setup! Anyway - upgrading right now is pointless. Tell them to forget about it until late 2015/early 2016 at least!

He seems keen, is buying into the alpha a worthwhile experience? We are talking about an adult here. I have said so far that I think he would need a big graphics card upgrade at the least, I think his system can take one of the 95W FX cpus as well.

Haha. My last comment looks rather cheeky! But I still bet that setup would struggle badly. My best guess would be that you'll want a top notch quad core cpu, 8gb of good ddr3 ram, and something like a 7970 to get a decent framerate at medium settings, for the most part. This game will support hyperthreading too. So an i7 is not a bad idea. Anyway, there's not much you can do with the game right now. As good as the flight physics are, I get bored pretty quickly just flying around an arena. I obviously backed the game myself. So I feel optimistic about it. But unless the dog fighting module looks seriously exciting to them, it's definitely worth just sitting back and watching progress for a bit. I wouldn't expect things to open up much more until the spring next year, probably. But even then, we'll probably still only have a small amount to play with. There is a form of progress tracker here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/project-status But tbh, it doesn't give any indication of how far into production things are.

Cheeky is fine given it was informative too

Here we see a Phenom 980BE doing all right http://www.techspot.com/review/642-c...nce/page6.html

And a year out of date but I found some walking around the hanger rough benchmarks that seemed OK as long as the machine had something like a 7970.

So I'm guessing his system wouldn't be a disaster for wandering around a hanger, but far from ideal.

I shall suggest that while an R9 290 would improve his system (which is what he was thinking of getting), if he waits then the next gen graphics card may be out before the game becomes worth getting.
