Biggest issue they've had is putting together the boring back end stuff like 64bit world map support for cryengine, zone instancing for vehicles/space stations (to allow gravity switching as you enter leave craft and also large multi crew craft to operate with lots of small fighters on the same map without killing the netcode) and new netcode (they ditched the cryengine code as it just couldn't cope). Hopefully now these have been demonstrated in the recent demo it should just be a case of bug fixing and stitching together. The next 6 months should be quite productive (Even more so from the single player perspective as that has been progressing in the background by a separate team).

really can't wait for this game but cant help but think this is going to be a massive letdown. Was a huge fan of freelancer and just think this has been way over hyped.

I had a quick play last night. Feels a little like mass effects arcturus station. I'd recommend checking out the glitch video to get an idea of their plans for this first landing area: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5ngJZEAJnk

From the sound of it more planet sites should be available soon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2YMlnn4Ngk

Yeh I love the visual style - so Cyberpunk ^_^ I have a feeling this game will have a crap soundtrack, though.

That glitch video just made me realise how I did something in the hangar module early last year. I managed to get out of the hangar by running into a corner section of one of the big doors. I had to keep moving left and right to stay in the corner, but I didn't realise it was that motion which got me through it. Anyway, there was nothing interesting out there. Just darkness with a sun, and infinite falling!

I should be up and running within a week or so. I'll have to get this installed again. Hopefully the fps module will arrive soon. Quite keen to see how well that part plays as I'm not really sure what kind of job that Illfonic team will be able to do.

Rumour has it that Ilfonic where struggling with the complexity as they usually do smaller projects so thats why it is being bought in house with the idea that the ex-cryengine devs in Germany will be able to do some of the more advanced stuff they couldn't however I understand an initial release of FPS should be available in the next month.

The game hasn't been released yet, and isn't planned to be for a long time.

It has a lot of money going into it for something that's crowdfunded, but it's not a lot by game development standards.

Around $90 million dollars isn't much by game dev standards? Elite was completely developed with a lot less($2.4 mil)

The costs of developing a modern game are somewhat higher than in the old wireframe days! (Elite only cost about £2000 to make actually, which is about £6000 in today's money, not 2.4million).

Ah, that might've been what I heard CR talking about the other day when I had 10 for the chairman on in the background..

Agreed! Though I think we should be seeing a lot more playable stuff next year sometime.

Are you talking about Elite Dangerous? If so, have you actually played that game? There's nothing to do. It's so simplistic compared to what SC is aiming for. Well, at least when I last played it a few weeks back anyway.

If E: D then it cost an awful lot more than $2.4m, the crowdfunding was only a small proportion of the actual cost of the game. Not to mention one small team producing a single-aspect game is quite different from a multi-aspect game involving several very large development studios.

Yeah, but you can actually play ED right now, though. SC miss deadlines like Stormtroopers miss shots at Rebels!

Plus ED are coming out with content, as originally stated.
They already have 400 billion star systems to explore and we're slowly getting everything else. Slowly, because it takes time to set up and test 400 billion of everything, I expect.

"Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien": The best is the enemy of the good. Voltaire worked that out a few hundred years ago and it is still true now.

An upcoming patch in Elite will allow landing on a planet, and more stuff will be added over time. I think the overall aim (to make a great space game) is the same, the difference is that in Elite something is shipping now. Shipping something good, now is better than shipping the best, never. It doesn't change the ability to have vision, just how you get there.

Really, $90M is not chicken feed. Assume a developer costs you $100K per year to hire including cost of office space and equipment (game devs aren't that well paid so it seems a fair guess). That would mean 900 man years of effort for the money. That really is a lot, partly because development doesn't scale that well: you can't make a baby in one month by getting 9 women pregnant and software often works the same way. The way out of that is to create some sort of playable game ASAP, and grow the rest around it.

So in the long run I wouldn't be surprised if Elite ends up the bigger game simply because they have better execution and a proper revenue model of selling a product.

I would love to be wrong, but SC just seems to be a Daikatana for the 21st century, all vision and no progress. At some point I expect panic to set in and something to ship that fails to meet expectations, and the longer the delay the bigger those expectations will be.
