3D PC Gaming - much cop?

    As above.
Just waiting to get my new 3D projector shipped and thought I'd enquire.
I've heard there are advantages to PC 3D over PS3, 360 etc. and I wondered what they were? I.E. Is it simply higher res related as you'd expect?
I also wondered if it was any cop in general It'll be about a 90" projected image.
    Cheers

As someone who went kind of all out for 3d vision and was disappointed with performance etc id say forget about 3d for now and when occulus rift comes out go for that. Projection gaming is very nice. Out of curiousity what projector did you go for?

Re: 3D PC Gaming - much cop?

I've had a few in my day, since I used to fix them. I usually went for high-end JVC's etc. but this time I managed to get a good deal on a Optoma HD25-LV, nice pj for the cash and I've seen 3D movies demo'ed, hence the interest in 3D gaming Since having PJ's since about 2007 can't see myself going back to a TV set.

Nice! Any chance you post pics of your setup? i want one for a cinema but pjs usually go for well beyond my budget being a student lol. Are there any budget 1080p projectors(no 3d but with hdmi maybe dvi or dp too?) that you'd recommend?

It's the usual scenario of being a very minority area, so devs don't spend a lot of time optimising for the experience. Yes, the resolution, fidelity and frame rate etc. are all better on PC, but unless you happen to have a game with backing from someone pushing stereo, or one that flukes into a great experience, there are usually drawbacks compared to 2D gaming.

Oculus rift as mentioned has already become the hot 3d technology, and games are being designed with this in mind - hopefully for you, this will have a knock on increase in experience for other 3D methods.

Sure mate, well my Optoma is incoming after having to be sent back - not a great start but Optoma were good about a replacement, so give me a few days and I'll see what I can do It's actually a spare room setup, but my pops gave me a hand since he is a builder - so a pretty pro job. I basically have a ceiling mounted PJ and a home-made grey painted screen - works really well, although again I'm putting a lot of it down to a great finish on it due to my old man
The best bet for a budget projector is to buy it second hand TBH from somewhere like avforums. You should be able to get something not too bad for £300ish, possibly less. Largely they hold their value (to a point), so you won't lose much on them. TBH I'd go for a 720p one if your limited by budget. I sold my old Infocus 76 for less than £200, and despite a few dust blobs was in great nick. If you wanted to look around £300-400, you should be able to pick up a JVC-HD1, which is pretty old (and massive!) but still incredible picture quality and will destroy most budget models

Thanks. It's not the be all and end-all of course, just wondered if it's worth a look seeing as I've gone 3D. I'm not the biggest supporter of 3D myself, see it more of an added bonus - in some cases. Cheers

Re: 3D PC Gaming - much cop?

I have streamed wireless to my Samsung 3DTV using the Nvidia setup, only downside to that is due to streaming you are limited to 720p. Main thing you get is really good depth of field. Some games it works really well and others it looks terrible, Battlefield 3, Deus Ex Human Revolution & Dishonored look cool in 3D. Borderlands 2 I wasn't impressed by, mind you it only gets 1 star for 3D when you check out the compatibility / recommended games on the Nvidia site.

For PS3, Killzone 3 is REALLY good in 3D and there is a pool game, think it is Hustle Kings which also benefits immensely from the 3D. I have also played the 3 Sly Cooper HD remastered games in 3D, good but with them being so bright and vibrant after about a half hour it really gave me eye strain and my eyes were streaming so had to turn it off.

Re: 3D PC Gaming - much cop?

Too much of a fad IMO.

I am one of the many who gets motion/travel sick and 3D games seem to set this off. Perhaps it will get better over time but as things stand there are too many issues (some of which accentuate the motion sickness).

I have tried Occulous Rift as well (2 friends have the dev kit) and it makes me sick even quicker, although I can see the potential of it over current 3D displays, for me at least it just isn't viable in it's current state......on the flip side one of my friends doesn't get any motion sickness from it and he hates using a standard display to game now....so YMMV.....I would most certainly demo any 3D tech before purchasing to avoid disappointment.

Yeah I agree to a point that it is all a bit faddy, just have a PJ that can handle 3D so thought I'd give it a bash. Can't see myself playing for extended period TBH.

Thanks for the info. I think i will shop around for the JVC-HD1 even though theres none in the uk(i may try to import it from somwhere). If by chance i was to find one and the bulb was gone is it easy to get replacements etc?

Re: 3D PC Gaming - much cop?

The JVC is just a suggestion, there will be similar models - some of the early Panasonic's the AE models also present good value. I'd almost always recommend a higher-spec older model than a newer budget model, that said I'm pretty happy with the Optoma HD25-LV (slightly brighter version of the HD25/HD131X). It does decent 1080p and the 3D is a bonus. I'd suggest picking one up from a forum, as they tend to go for £350-500 on there. Bulbs vary from machine to machine, you'd have to look around. Thinking about it some of the old Sony LCD PJ's are ace too. It all depends on what size screen your going to project - make sure you check throw distances etc. Do a Google search for throw distance calculator and you can select models etc. on there - enjoy

Re: 3D PC Gaming - much cop?

Im in love with that jvc that you mentioned(after seeing youtube footage and reviews) and don't mind spending some time to find one.

I recently bought a cheap Sanyo PLC-XE32 and i was messing with the height adjustment button and kinda broke it. The spring and the plastic button came off but screw is fine. Is there anyway to fix it?

I'd echo what others have said about the oculus rift. I've tried one and it's absolutely fantastic. Complete immersion and I was sat in the middle of earls court one surround by people queueing to try it.

Re: 3D PC Gaming - much cop?

I would recommend people to watch this demonstration of an Oculus Rift in action whilst in game and watch to the end because there is a cool feature/gimmick that I would love to try out, when the proper 1080 consumer version comes out

I would go against the grain and suggest that the Rift is only good in some instances, namely just sitting there on your own..... Who else enjoys gaming with friends!?

I have a 100" 3D screen that is a marvel to game on, I use an Optoma HD33 and will never go back. 3D TVs and Monitors are a bit of a fad as the immersion is lost due to seeing your fireplace and pot plant as you fight a dragon lol. But when a 100" screen fills your FOV it is mind blowing, especially with great surround sound! Running through a 3D forest in Skyrim or the Witcher 2 is in a league of it's own anyway but then you add a few friends and some beers to the mix and you find yourself bordering on agoraphobia lol. I'd love to discuss PJ setups if anyone else is about? Seeing is believing and going back to your 30" IPS or whatever just doesn't cut it

Ah yeah, and who wants to watch a film on their own on a rift when you have the option of a home cinema!
