    X Rebirth

Thought I would give X it's own thread instead of posting in the Star Citizen or Elite threads

I've always loved the X games and the new trailer for X Rebirth is looking damn good! Coming out November as well which is much closer than I was expecting

The latest trailer for Egosoft's space sim, X Rebirth, offers a tantalising sneak peek at the game's space combat with fleets consisting of mega spacecraft and dogfights with nimble fighters.

X Rebirth's space combat ranges from small scale skirmishes to fleet-scale space combat. Players can sign up and fight for the military, become a pirate, work for the police or only fight when self defence is required. When involved in combat, players can target turrets and shield generators to weaken enemies, and damage engines and jump drives to prevent escape.

As highlighted in a previous developer diary, the space sandbox title lets players to fly around, through and land on the buildings that make up the space cities and factories. Players can walk around inside the structures and even crawl through repair ducts.

X Rebirth features two types of trading. The first allows the player to trade from port to port in small quantities using their own ship. The second lets the player trade in bulk with large scale contracts using a fleet of cargo ships.

According to studio head Bernd Lehahn, Egosoft's goal was to create a "living, breathing futuristic universe crawling with life" within X Rebirth. The title is set to launch Nov. 15 in Europe and Nov. 19 in North America for Windows PC, German studio confirmed in August.

    Re: X Rebirth

I'm a huge fan of X - I've easily got 500+ hours in a combination of XBTF & X2, with X3 sat in my steam library taunting me at the moment.

One thing that always bothered me about it was the combat though. It always felt a lot like a terran flight sim, so some of the stuff you could do in 'real' space. At the time XBTF came out I was playing a lot of Tachyon: The fringe, and it really felt like that games 'slide' mechanic was a much better approach than the 'strafe drive' functionality of X. That and other stuff like arbitrary speed caps rather than constant diminishing acceleration always bugged me in what was in most other ways a thoroughly 'realistic' game.

Hopefully they'll have addressed that, and fixed the economy a bit (solar plants were the only thing that made money in X2 - possibly a good political comment at the moment, but kind of took some of the magic out of the whole 'fully functioning economy' thing.

Also a big fan of the X-series. I would suggest playing X3 or X3AP to see what you make of the economy because there was a bit of a change. Making complexes improved the whole efficiency of supply chains; that combined with automated traders and whole host of other features and scripts.

With regards to the combat and movement, I doubt they've changed it movement wise. Not only might it be a limitation of the engine but it's also how they've always done it. I don't mind it, but combat was always quite straightforward; adding Newtonian physics I don't think would make it much better TBH. Maybe it could if implemented well, but I am basing this off the last game that I played that had proper Newtonian physics - Elite II!

I don't know - they have stated they wanted to improve the combat feel, and I think put out a vid about it.

    Re: X Rebirth

I still haven't played any of X3:TC or AP... both are sitting in my steam list after the humble pack few weeks ago. Tempted to jump straight to AP so I can stick it on the TV and play with a controller (though I can't imagine how all those keybindings on a 360 controller )

    Re: X Rebirth

they wouldn't need to do a huge amount to the physics, basically just make the throttle actually a throttle rather than a 'desired % of maximum speed' and it would address most things. Tachyon was a pretty contrived space shooter except for that one mechanic, which still sticks out in my mind as being great 13 years later.

It looks like they've done a lot to improve the scale of things as well. all in its probably the only game I'm likely to get on release this year (except arkham origins, but then that was free so it doesn't count).

    Why would it have MP?

Ah of course, you haven't heard of X games before. The first one game out in 1999. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_%28co...game_series%29

No multiplayer - the game is just a MASSIVE fight/trade sandbox
No controller support until the last game (X3: Albion Prelude) - the older games use the whole keyboard

The games are great but it is a bit hard to get into XBTF and X2 these days so I would suggest starting at X3 or even Terran Conflict if you want to give it a bash.

That city one looks astonishing. It also looks like its going to murder CPU cycles. I hope they've got it well threaded!

Hope you can avoidnhaving to traipse around stations too much as well though.

I saw this a couple of days ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt4B4e3i5_0
Pathfinding is certainly very threaded in Rebirth, apparently in the older X games all the ships recalculated their flightpaths every frame. Ouch!
