What Makes A Good Gaming PC?

Sub title, ~ (What do games need?)

PC gaming to me has always been the freedom to mod and the cost of said game is normally lower.

But, unless you can get the level of the graphics and frame rate to equal that of consoles, you may as well play the game on consoles?

I am interested in what you would need to play games at the level of current or next gen consloes. You often hear people say "there is no use in that much RAM, as the game wont use it" and people building a gaming rig around a I5 not a I7

There is minimum spec and recommended spec but never a maximum?

So, what is overkill, under powered or a good buy?

Re: What Makes A Good Gaming PC?

The RAM argument has merit - PS3 games need to run in about 200MB of RAM, so any game with a PS3 port is designed not to use much RAM.

In the general case... a gaming PC will have a GPU costing three figures. A "normal" PC won't. That's the major differentiator. Anything else is gravy.

So would a PC I3, 4GB RAM and a Titan make a good gaming rig?

remove the titan add a 780 along with 8 gigs total of ram, a case, a psu, some hard drives and a mobo and you have a decent pc that should work lol

A much better one than an i7 with 16GB of RAM and a GeForce 660, which is what PC World considers a gaming PC worth >£1000:

Re: What Makes A Good Gaming PC?

A good gaming PC is one that makes the gamer happy to own it.

Beyond that, depends on what the games she wants to play are, her budget, and what her personal preferences are for things like style, noise etc.

As far as specifications go, pick the most demanding game you want to play, pick the settings you want to run, and spec accordingly.

Better than I would have expected.

I mean, in PC World a 4GB GeForce 630 is more than twice as good as a 1.5GB GeForce 660 isn't it?

    Why not?

Some prebuilt machines are actually good if you go to deent places or know what you are looking for.

Re: What Makes A Good Gaming PC?

Besides from the obvious stuff, I'd say a good gaming PC is one you are comfortable with.

Consoles are "sit on sofa and play" type of environment and PC can be your own little world with headphones or surround sound setups you can make it as boring or great as you wish, that's what I like about PC gaming.

Provided the hardware is at least good

On another note, with "Steam box" coming soon? will blur the lines between consoles and full blown PC's

Also is Steam box a generic term for any small form PC based machine which is just just to run games?

I suspect to start with a lot of spare PCs will end up as Steam Boxen. Not everyone can afford to build a PC just to see if the experience is any good.

You could spend all the money in the world and buy the best spec PC and it would be no good if you play a game that doesnt push it.

I good gaming PC is one that plays the games you want at a good fps and graphic settings.

What makes a good Gaming PC?

Whatever you want. Thats the benefit over consoles... customisation. Sure you could buy a pre-built gaiming machine but most PC Gamers with decent machines love their PC as much as the games they play.

I enjoy building, upgrading, tinkering, and just generally looing at my PC. I also enjoy using it to beat the crap out of most games. Thats why I PC game, the modding community and open platform is a major 2nd factor though.

Compare this to a console gaming. It simply seems an empty hobby to me...

A PC only needs to be able to play games on medium settings to match consoles equivalents, and for a machine capable of that will likely set you back under £300 (excl. monitor etc.). Just like a console, you should either have it already or be willing to pay extra for decent accessories)
