    righty.

    Installed the 4.1 CATs... looking good... here's the important bit of the conf.ini file:

    HardwareShaders=1

    Shadows=2
    Specular=2
    SpecularLight=2
    DiffuseLight=2
    DynamicalLights=1
    MeshDetail=2
    VisibilityDistance=3

    Sky=2
    Forest=0
    LandShading=3
    LandDetails=1

    LandGeom=2
    TexLarge=1
    TexLandQual=3
    TexLandLarge=1

    VideoSetupId=8
    Water=0

    ForceShaders1x=0
    PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.0625
    PolygonOffsetUnits=-1.0
    Effects=1

    with the added line as suggested above and AA x4, no AF - through flak from 4 cruisers and a carrier - nice n stable... and still v.pretty in perfect mode as you can see nice.

    That's on a 9800pro with an XP2100+ & 1GB memory

    got a feeling each man to his own devices here on settings. We've had a Radon9800 Pro flush of purchases recently so it might be easier to sort, but prob not

    Bombers don't win wars... strategic bombing wins wars.

    Its generally accepted that the focusing on Germany's oil production plants from late 1943 onwards hastened the end of the war dramatically, so much so that Hitler's Ardennes offensive of '44 absolutely relied on the capture of allied fuel dumps. In some cases we destroyed the dumps rather than let them fall into enemy hands. The offensive ground to a halt due to fuel shortage and some heroic defensive actions.

    Bomber Harris' night by night bombing of Dresden, Hamburg et al had little or no effect on the German war effort. It did not shatter German morale as was thought, a fact you'd have thought the Allies, especially the British, would have learnt from their own experience of the Blitz.

    /me points back to point 1

    bombers win wars

    I still love the idea of pathfinders, one bomber to lead them all, one bomber to guide them, one bomber to drop flares on the target and in the darkness find them

    Oh dear i've lost it again....

    I'll be in the bomb bay if anyone needs me....

    people see TiG drooling next to a 2000lb bomb going my precious

    there is the argument that the strategic bombing campaign caused Germany to switch resources from producing offensive weapons (tanks, bombers) to the manufacture of anti aircraft defences (AAA, fighters). Albert Speer supported this theory when he talked about it after the war.

    there is also the argument that by whacking production with bombing - factories, oil, supply lines (railyards etc) - we enabled the Soviets to hasten their offensive in the East by many many months, savings hundreds of thousands of lives (don't say this to a Russian, they'll go all red in the face and shout at you for flipping ages - sometimes they'll even hit you - really)

    but for me the terror bombing of Dresden and Hamburg was a misguided attempt to bring Germany to its knees. Inexcusable really. But then - had we the atom bomb, would we have used it? Probably! Though I wonder if Hitler would have capitulated, even then.

    Horrific fact more people died in Dresden than Hiroshima
