Yep, find the post on the Ubi forums... Plane_eater, one of the dev team, openly admits that the game wasn't finished and has been released purely to be in time for Christmas. He makes the very valid point that this type of game has NO mass market appeal and will be bought by enthusiast whether they release it at Christmas or Easter or any bloody time of the year.

With the state its in now, this isn't a stand alone game worth £34.99, there simply ISN'T enough there to justify that price, especially if you compare it to the multitude of planes IL2 or FB gave you. Even AEP, a true add-on pack (its even got the word EXPANSION in its title!) gave you more planes than this 'full game'.

The truth about lack of space to fit it on two CDs IS cobblers as far as I'm concerned. If it were true, then why isn't there a downloadable kit available now?

Nope, for me this 'game' has all the hallmarks of a rushed release. Bugs all over the place that even cursory playtesting would have found. An imbalance of flyable planes, an imbalance of weapon loadouts and capabilities, a distinct lack of missions, a very, very poor campaign mode (bugged to hell and back) and a general shodiness all round.

Considering that this is built on the IL2 framework (I DEFY you to find a single difference in the front end screens), I have to wonder where the work and my money went to?

There's less land to model, and what land there is uses the same textures as FB AEP so that was no hardship. The plane modelling is off (fly-by of a zero at 50 knots, anyone?). The AI is WORSE than in AEP so they've taken a step BACK there. There's a Pearl Harbour mission for IJN, but not a single torpedo bomber to be had.... by EITHER side.... which beggars belief, to be honest.

Now, we all know that eventually a patch will be released and we'll get all the things that are missing, but I have to say that this is a mickey take of the highest order. It's almost like Ubi are using its customers as a loan service.... we pay them full price for a full game but get half now and half later.

And they wonder why piracy is on the increase? Stickied in the Ubi forums is a post saying that piracy is jeapodising future development, which is true. But if this is what they do with a 'full price game', what the hell do they expect?

Oh and another thing, the extra content, just how big a patch is that going to be? If its a disc's worth and Ubi were being too tight to make it a 3 CD release, just how the hell are people supposed to download it? 800megs, even on BB is a bit of a joke.

Just my thoughts on a half assed attempt of a game that's been skewed by a cynical profit driven publisher to screw the very people who have given them the money to be where they are today.

Some very apt observations there Deck and I have to agree with you. I spoke to a beta tester a few days ago (one we know and trust but will keep private) and he was suprised at how well the final release was!!! Makes you wonder

Posted in Ubi Forums under the title, "Ok, Wheres the patch?"

    posted Thu October 28 2004 15:57
You know, the one that has all the stuff that couldn't be fitted onto the 2 CDs?

This'll be the patch that corrects the lack of torpedo bombers for IJN, includes re-written AI scripts so my wingmen or the enemy don't just fly into each other.

The patch that allows me to do a career without my entire flight flying into the sea or the hills.

You know THAT patch, the one that can't be being worked on because everything for it was ready and we only didn't get it because it couldn't be fitted onto 2 CDs.

Yep, I'm talking about the patch that should be available for download NOW as we've been told its stuff that couldn't be squeezed in and most definitely NOT stuff that was finished.

Of course, if you want to tell me that its going to be two weeks... or even six, or eight, then I'm not going to be too pleased.

I won't be pleased becuase that might just infer that Ubi have released an unfinished game. Now they wouldn't go and do that to this extremely loyal and massive fan base, would they? Not just to make a quick buck out of us, would they?

You see, I won't be pleased if they have because I've just shelled out £34.99 for this game to find I have less to do and fly than in the ADD ON pack that AEP was. I've paid a full game price and I'd like a FULL GAME!

What I've got here is not very much, and what I have got doesn't work, why is that?

I've read Plane_eater's post. I fully appreciate what it must be like to work under those conditions and I blame NONE of the development team in the slightest. In fact, I slaute you, one and all, for giving me the best game I've played for years, from IL2 to FB and AEP. S! to you all.

No, I ask these 'difficult' questions to let UbiSoft know that I am very, very, very far from happy with the product I have bought.

£34.99 is a full price for a full game. There's less in here than in AEP! It's bugged to hell and back. There are some criminal omissions in the planeset and seriously imbalanced gameplay.

Yes, the rushing for a Christmas release has ensured that we've ALL got a turkey... nice one Ubi.

I particularly like the way you have used me, the consumer, for a quick line of credit. I've paid full price, you've given me half the game now and I'll get the other half some other time. I do a great deal on balance transfers too, in fact how about I just mail you my **** credit card, you send me a stack of blank CDs and I'll download the games when you see fit to make them playable, that way you can have my money NOW and I'll know I'll get something worth playing when its good and ready.

In fact, I have a far better idea. This game is really in a pre-release Beta state (I've done enough beta testing and reviews to know it when I see it)... so here's the deal. Me, and everyone else who've bought this will quite happily wait for you to patch it to a playable level, we'll report the bugs,t he fualt and omissions and you, UbiSoft, will pay us a very reasonable one-off beta testing fee of just £14.99, which fortunately brings my total expenditure on the game back down to £20, which is exactly what you SHOULD be charging for an expansion pack like this.

    Thank you for your time.
Sorry, coudlnt hold the bile in any longer, the more I think about it, the more I feel I've been fleeced.

well when you put it like that.. but tbh.. all I wanted to do with this was fly the Hellcat off a carrier... like the very first time I picked up a flight sim.... :shrugs:

but yeah.. £35 quid for an add on is a bit galling isn't it...

yeah - you'd really think they'd make the effort with this. After all, there are the ships, there are the planes - *ahem* - something's missing here!

Another thing I've noticed is that they've gone to the trouble to do an Aussie voice pack, yet the British voice pack is still the one with the dodgy transatlantic accents and the air traffic controller who sounds like John Major - FFS!

They deleted my post, so I made another....

It would seem that my post asking some pertinent questions about the poor state that Pacific Fighters has been released in has been deleted.

Sure, Ubi own the boards, so its up to htme and their mods to run the boards as they see fit, but its hardly good customer service, is it?

So, am I allowed to ask question such as why this game has been released in such a bugged state and where the patch is if everything in the patch is ready?

Or are those kind of questions not welcome on this board?

WHy am I so peed off?

Cos of the attitude of the people on those forums.

Now I'm sorry to generalise here, but those Americans are all having a moan beacuse the rlease date for them is later than over here. So what? Grow up and get a life, just for once us Europeans get something first and the US gets all uppity.

Well, its not worth the bleeding wait anyways, and NOW they US are saying that Ubi is holding the patch back until the US have the game too... ANYTHING to make themselves feel sodding superior... paranoid, idiotic, childish bloody gun freaks.

I'm angry because the country that holds free speech as a constitutional right has deleted my first post and closed my second thread... claiming that it is a privately run forum... fair enough, but its a touch of the OcUK as I can see. Dissenting posts are not allowed, so they can get stuffed.

I'm angry cos I can't really afford to shell out for the game, but I have and what I have here is a pile of poop... it really is. Planes that are flayble on the box aren't even in the game! Its the run up to chrimbo, I'm saving like a miser to give my kids pressies, all the big bills have come at once and I scraped together enough dosh to go and buy this carp... then get bulldozed out of sight when I complain about it.

I'm just gonna take a note of the names and arbitarily ban the goits if they EVER show their faces on here. Abuse of power? Yes, it is... but sometimes it has to be done.

    Jeesus I'm angry!

well i have to say i was looking forward to PF fully expecting to buy it and bring my X45 out of retirement and get back into the flying game but im not sure i can be bothered now , i dont think i'l even bother downloading it which says a lot.

you should try america's army same situation only difference is the game is free , tons of bugs to$$ers for devs and an official forum that ocuk would be hard pushed to match in an over egotistical dev butt kissing never say anything bad kind of way, but still for all the crap im still playing americas army and will continue to do so thru lag, bugged patches and rampant cheating just as im sure you will continue to fly in the il2 world because we are quite simply addicted

and so long as there are forums where we can rant and rave about the crap im sure we will stick at it

I'll be flying FB + AEP for sure, but my copy of PF is going back to the shops today. I'll buy it again when its flyable, IF that's what I have to do to fly with the Marlins online.

To be honest, UbiSoft have us faithful gamers EXACTLY where they want us. By making the game something that can be installed over FB+AEP, instead of a standalone game in its own right, they have ensured that anyone who wants to fly online WILL have to buy the game or face not having anyone to fly against in a few months time.

If it had been a non-compatible, stand alone game that had the promised planeset, then you have a clear choice whether or not to buy it. If you fly FB+AEP, you're sorted and if you want some carrier action, you load up PF. With the install-over option, those with FB will install over meaning we ALL have to to get an online fight.

I want to make it quite clear that I'm ranting at UbiSOft and NOT 1c Maddox. Plane_Eater made it quite clear that Ubi pressured Oleg into an early release... "he who pays the piper calls the tune"... but if we don't like the tune, we ain't gonna blame the piper!

That Ubi forum is full of weak, toadying fanboys! I mean, I have played PF a little bit, until it crashed and wouldn't reload, and it just felt like an addon. At least I got it from play and only payed an addon price for it. Oh well.

I'm keeping both installing FB + AEP and FB+AEP+PF, so I've a choice as to which to use. At the moment, with PF and patches starting to fly about, it looks like everyone will be using all kinds of different versions, so FB + AEP will be the touchstone for me, for the time being, and my default for HL.
