Keeping your eye on them without external views...

Anyone got any good tips for this?

I'm finding myself quite heavily reliant upon external views (F6 mainly :/)

If I just spin in cockpit, I either totally fluff it and crash or lose them within seconds (and they coon get on my tail)

Watching tracks like Luke vs Mahgar and the tutorials makes it look TOO easy

    Make sure you know that:

    F9 changes the hatswitch operation....from SNAP TO......to......PAN VIEW>

Panning is the way to go...

NEXT....play on servers with externals OFF so you AND the enemy have to use it....

then....you know the Toggle Gunsight View button....(moves your head inline with the Reticule) use it while you pan around with the jatswitch to move your head back and forward a fraction to see either side of cockpit pillars.

Keep your eye on the WHOLE SCREEN...not just for the bad guy, BUT to see if its shaking....if it is, you are turning too tight and verging on a stall.

and the BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU....have a button that recentres your view. I THINK it is the Number5 on the keypad by default....I have that as a thumb button....the centre one....yes I have forsaken a SHOOT KEY for something more usefull.....the way to see ahead in a panic

When you lose them, always pull back on the stick and climb. Better to be high and slow that circling at your original altitude slowly bleeding off speed.

Go UP! Then do wide, erratic sweeps looking out all round. Don't bother looking somewhere where they can't be (you lost them in a turning dogfight, they went down underneath you to your left, so it's unlikely that they'll be below and to your right).

If one gets on your six, move to make yourself hard to hit. Pulling back on the stick is fine, but keeps you well within view. Try nosing over, then rolling inverted and pulling back HARD... but when you'r vertical, roll again and pull back HARD... do that a few times and you'll be going very fast in some random direction and, with luck, your six'll be clear.

setting the hat switch to panning - as per Zak's suggestion

and getting a good hat switch to begin with, something that sits nicely under the thumb

other than that, keep your head moving and also your eyes moving - set up a regular and methodical scan, making sure you're not leaving any part of the screen out.

don't fly straight for too long if you think the enemy is close by. when you bank, use this as an opportunity to see what's behind you.

    remember UP. look above you
remember BELOW. go inverted and look below you

If I set to panning, it only goes to 45 degrees, then stops (and snaps back when I let go)

Is it meant to do that? Or is it meant to continue panning until I let go of hat? ;/

I can't find the link ATM but theres a program called NewView which allows you to customise your views and controls. I currently have the hatswitch to a gentle pan view and also set so the joystick controls some of the view movement i.e. rudder turns the view slightly, pulling up raises the view slightly. It can be annoying when in a fighter sometimes but you can always turn it of with a custom key. I'll try to find a link. Its works with trackir and PF too.

Ooh, now THAT sounds like something handy. I guess the effect is a bit like turning your head the way you're turning when driving a car?

    one minor thing with what Deckard said....to climb is good....but you slow....you slow....y o u s l o w....and you sit there...

so while he's right to say climbing gives you a view and puts your Enregy back into the bank.....with height...

but DONT sit there like a lemon...Luke always gets me like that !

Its something like that but its completely customizable (im really to lazy to figure it out past custimising the hatswitch and view ). There might be a link to it on the sturmovik essentials on the official IL2 forums. If its not there I'll put it up and host it for a while.

It can be annoying, however, especially when your diving on someone and you have to make those slight adjustments which play havoc with your view but its great for turning and burning. Its really useful for the British method of landing corsairs though where you have to keep the back of the carrier in the corner of the screen through the entire approach.

Nice one, would like to give this a try out and see how it goes.

I like these little add-on things, I find TSO to be very useful.
