The one I am reading at the moment (War Eagles) is written (and published) during the war and is captivating. Full of combat stuff and so so quaint. The author talks about all types of raids. He talks about the spontaneous flights of a couple of fighters over to France to bust up anything they find. He can't tell you what the real name for these missions is as its classified, but for the purposes of the book, he calls then "pineapples".

LMAO - Clever of him not to pick a name closely assosiated with the real one.

Gibson's book would have to have written during the second world war as he didn't survive the war.

Reach for the sky is an excellent account of total refusal to accept a disability and to get ahead regardless. Bader was as much a headache to the Germans once he was captured as he was in the air beforehand.

Did you find 'It never snows in September'? I looked this week but was short of time and couldn't find it. Though it is still in print as Waterstones had it on their system. It shows how the German soldiers felt about the British, American and Polish troops also the attrition they suffered trying to eject the British from Arnhem. Given that these [British] were light infantry with virtually no heavy weapons the German soldiers suffered horrendous casualties with some units reduced by 80%.

Couldnt find its im afraid :( You right about Gobsons book been written during the War as was Richard Hillarys. As a side note I have a book by Ed Smith who was a late war spitfire pilot whos squadron found the unmarked graves of Gibson and his co pilot, carefully hidden and tended by the local population from the occupying forces of Germany

Its that book I mentioned a while back. First edition worth a few bob I believe. However I think it was reprinted in 1983. War Eagles by James Saxon Childers. Story of the Americans in the RAF pre USA joining in.
