    Project Zomboid

Haven't seen any threads for this.

Usually I am dead against pre-purchasing, buying into alpha's/beta's, but every now and then there's a gem like this (the other one for me was Minecraft) and I have jumped right in. I am still learning the do's and don'ts, how to craft and cook etc, but it's really fun so far.

Yes, it's another zombie game, but this one feels a little different (like not having great graphics, but good graphics do not a good game make). Like it's mixed with the Minecraft survivalist theme, but with no digging for hours to make stuff. You start off carrying nothing, you sneak around looting houses and trying to evade zombies, you choose a house as your "base" and then try and protect it and you. There are many different "moodles" to take care of (basically an emotional or physical effect on your character) like hunger, thirst, cuts, boredom, fright etc. You can read books to increase skills, read newspapers and magazines to decrease boredom, rip up old clothes to make bandages and then use those bandages to fix your ouchies, ransack a clinic and dose yourself up on anti-depressants and sleeping tablets... The list goes on.

Then there's clothing, weapons, crafting, sleeping, line of sight, hearing, rain, drying yourself after being out in the rain, storms, massive, MASSIVE maps...

There are a few issues, it's still in development, but they have many plans for the future including multiplayer of some sort, roaming hordes of zombies and much more.

Anyone else playing it? What are your thoughts? If you are undecided, a really good LP on the game is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM8CP8IYh04

    Re: Project Zomboid

I picked it up back in June 2011 after reading this CTRL comic and the news article below it:

    http://www.cad-comic.com/cad/20110603

The first thing I did was hunt around for some sheets, which I tore into strips to make bandages via the Minecraft-ish crafting box (ie, place ingredients in, combine, receive new item). I then found some painkillers in the medicine cabinet of the house we were holed up in, which I gave her for the pain.

I also found a pillow in the closet, which I tried to offer her, thinking she'd be more comfortable. I ended up smothering her.

    Whoops.

So next game I knew not to try to give her the pillow. After a brief venture outside to the shed, I found a hammer and nails and some wood, and proceeded to board up our house, to slow down any zombies that might try to get in. At this point I was starting to get hungry, so I made my way over to the neighbor's house. After braining a zombie with my trusty hammer, I found some canned soup.

Combining it with a can opener, and a pot I'd found, I created a 'pot of soup'. I placed the pot in the oven and turned it on. At this point a radio started working, and while I was listening to the emergency broadcast, my soup, and the oven it was in, exploded. My first instinct was to try and save the soup.

Instead, I caught on fire and burned to death.

    Whoops.

So next game, I still ****ed up and the oven exploded. But this time, I didn't go near it. Instead I ran upstairs to grab my wife, thinking that I'd get her out of the house which was now on fire. However instead I accidentally clicked on the bed, not her. This caused me to take a nap. I woke up a few hours later in a blazing inferno. We both burned to death.

    Whoops.
I played it for a few days all those years ago, enjoyed it and then forgot about it until it was greenlit they they gave me a steam key due to my original purchase - It's been sitting in my library list waiting for play since... Maybe I'll give it a blast this weekend.

    Check it out:

    http://pzmap.crash-override.net/

Found this so useful as I kept getting lost.

Oh, and if you want an easy(ish) way to find an axe and a saw early on, I have had great success in a certain warehouse (highlight below to see where/which one). And I said (ish) because I had to fight my way through about 20 zeds to get to it...

Big Urban Warehouse, middle of Muldraugh. Check the map above, on the top right select Big Urban Warehouse from the drop down list and you will see it.
