it's probably from trying to slow his horse down when he was a kid!

Another time Ihad the good fortune to ride a very beautiful chestnut bay, Felix, at the Olympiad in Breslau. In the distance race my horse, a gelding, was going well, even in the second third of the course, and so I had hopes of success. Then came the last obstacle. I saw from a distance that it must be something special, as a crowd of people had gathered there. I thought to myself, "Keep going, there's worse to come!" and came winding up over the embankment, on top of which was a fence. People waved to me not to ride so fast, but I saw and heard nothing. My horse took the fence without hesitation and, to my great astonishment, went into the Weistritz River on the other side! Before I could act, the animal had jumped into the river, and mount and rider disappeared.

now I dont know about you guys, but that is funny as hell.....

before he's even made it into a plane he's cross country riding like a man posessed and jumped a fence that wasn't part of the course!!!
