Is there too much on Steam?

It's struck me that when I log in to Steam I'm inundated with SO many games, and I just don't know where to look!

The explosion of indie titles and developers springing up from everwhere has meant the choice is almost overwhelming to me. Is anyone else thinking that? There's a danger of spreading myself too thin and just not enjoying anything in particular because there's always something else wanting my attention..

It was ever thus with gaming, but Steam is just nuts. How to sort the wheat from the chaff??

Do you really find that though? I almost never look at the actual steam client but it certainly doesn't seem worse than anything else - like a lot of people I have a lot of unplayed stuff, but mostly its things from bundles that I didn't want, or when you can get a full series on discount and I've only played the last (with a lot of games I don't mind bad graphics, but I find a lot of older FPSs etc distractingly bad).

There is a lot of kak on Steam, that's for sure.
It's not quite as bad as the games on the Android Marketplace, but I do have to sift through yet another 12 "unique" open world RTS MMO RPGs or stunning new FPSes (that look just like all the others). It's lovely that indie devs are supported but I'm seeing a lot of repetition in the low-end games that come out, to the point where I remember them only as 'the red one' or 'the blue one'!

I do have a number of unplayed games, but those are just waiting for me to finish my current ones. I like to focus on my games and get really into them.
I also have a few from bundles, but I'll likely offload (I mean, gift) those to friends who are just starting out - No biggie if they dislike 'em, as they're essentially free.

Too much on Steam? Don't know, and don't care, because I don't use it.

Re: Is there too much on Steam?

I don't know if there's 'too much', but there's certainly a lot, and it's increasing at an ever growing rate.

I rarely just browse randomly looking for something though, will either have been linked something or will have seen it elsewhere and then I'm just on steam to buy it/read a couple of user reviews maybe.

I've not really care about there being too much. However because there are too much, the underrated games may go unnoticed.

Re: Is there too much on Steam?

That is my worry. I am getting interested in developing, however indie developers may get packed in under the weight of the sheer amount of Greenlight games.

Choice is good, but like Android there are games and apps you think "How on earth did they find that?"; there is simply too many out there and that is my worry for Steam. Finding these great unique games will be like finding a needle in a haystack.

There are some seriously impressive indie games out there, some which do rival top AAA titles. But if Steam keeps letting too many in it is just going to be going through "Jump", "Super jump", "Ultimate jump", "The best jump game yet" pile of nonsense until you actually find a decent game

Not good for indie developers nor the Steam marketplace. Especially those who want to get into game development like me, or those with great ideas which may not get the attention they deserve.

Re: Is there too much on Steam?

Treat Steam as a shop, nothing more, and you'll be fine. It's not a service to hand pick interesting games. I used to get mail order game catalogues and there were pages and pages of games - you didn't use the catalogue to make your decision what to play, you did that elsewhere, and just looked up the cheapest place to buy it.

Re: Is there too much on Steam?

I always found it odd that they added Greenlight so people could vote on what to add to Steam, then only a short time later are releasing indie and cheap (quite a few cheap and rubbish *cough* Desert Gunner *cough*) games by the bucket load, including RPGMaker games. I thought the whole point in Greenlight was to determine if these sort of games would be profitable or is it just too many of us being lazy and not bothering with GL ever, so Steams just adding the games anyway. Makes me feel bad for quite a few decent games that are caught up in GL though while some RPGMaker games make it straight in (not that the games are automatically bad for being made in RPGMaker but it just makes me really curious about Valve's decision process on Steam games).

Re: Is there too much on Steam?

Greenlight never seemed to work all that well. I must have checked it out once or twice, but most of the games there didn't interest me.

I don't think Steam has too many games, as I do my research elsewhere and if it's a game I want, will buy on steam or elsewhere. I learned that just because the game is on steam, doesn't mean I need it in my collection.... the 50 or so games I never played in my collection, but bought on sales, is testament to that.

I would say there's certainly too much. As someone just getting started in PC gaming I'm daunted to the point of putting it off!
