Speaking only from a perspective of knowing nothing about this particular scenario...

One thing I learned from playing way too much Freelancer was to never stay still. If you drop someone, then stop and turn to acquire the next target, you're easily acquired yourself.
The instant my first target exploded, I'd have blasted off with the afterburner round in a wide arc, turning the ship tightly and yawing/strafing to move off-line. That displaces me from anyone nearby and gives me time to reposition/look around for the next target.

No idea if it works against Elite's AI, but it's worth a shot next time, perhaps... ?

New beta released this morning, v1.04.

    Only small fixes:

    • Insurance screen occasionally not being displayed after ship was destroyed.
    • Very occasional crash when outfitting weapons.
    • Game occasionally getting stuck in the shipyard when buying a new ship.
    • Improvements to joining populated multiplayer islands.

    Few new paint jobs too.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

So, got a little bit tired of running cargo, so switched to a combat ship to give it a go. Got an Eagle, fitted it out with some lasers, and headed over to Eranin 2. Found a distress signal, jumped in, picked the Eranin side and proceeded to try and pick off some enemy fighters. I lasted about 60 seconds before I was rammed.

Thinking I was unlucky, I got another Eagle from insurance and headed back out. I lasted about 60 seconds before I was rammed.

    Kinda pointless, no?

It wasn't head on collisions, both times were from a side that I couldn't see, whilst I was trying to engage another ship around 1km ahead of me.

So as I've already said do NOT get mixed up in the main furball unless you're willing to be rammed. These ships are protecting a crippled dreadnought and will do anything to save it. Stay on the fringes and pick off stragglers, gradually working your way in.

I find it is best to start working your way out again once you are a distance where the entire Dreadnought can no longer be fully seen on your screen when viewing it side on.

I believe I was around 5k ish away from the main battle as I boosted away to pull one guy alone, I guess I didn't notice the second guy come after me.

Still a bit of a pointless system where they can ram and kill you instantly. I get the whole defending with your life thing for the NPC's, but when it detracts from game play it's surely a very bad design? If ramming wasn't insta-death then I'd be OK with it.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Bit of bad luck then I guess Allen. I have to admit - I got caught out last night, but it was entirely my fault. Got into a chicken run with a fighter and whilst I hit the vertical thrusters to move away I was travelling too quickly to be at max manoeuvrability. Unfortunately I died, lost about 10k's worth of vouchers, and also couldn't afford my ship on the insurance screen. So back to a Sidewinder and two pulse lasers lol.

I don't think it's bad design - after all, Elite is a risk vs reward game. At the conflict zones there's the possibility to make some great money, but not at the chance of losing it all. That's the point - harvesting Fighters is easy, but you need to know when to walk away. The next kill might be you.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Not sure if I am doing something wrong then, but I only see people getting around 250 credits per kill. Losing your ship and all your weapons can cost thousands even with insurance. To me that signifies that the reward is certainly not worth the risk of being rammed by a ship you cannot even see to avoid.

Same with transporting goods whilst playing online. I was taken out twice by gankers and it cost me dearly (both times around 10-18k worth of goods were lost and I ended up with almost nothing). Take into account insurance and how you only seem to make a couple of hundred per jump when starting out, it's again not worth the risk.

Don't get me wrong, I like risk and I don't like easy games... But I feel like it's just not worth doing much right now, except trading whilst offline to amass some credits, which is getting a little bit boring.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

350 credits per kill is typical. Look on the Bulletin Boards and you might see a mission offering you about a grand to kill 3 Federation fighters on top of the 350 per kill. Easy money. Also, I can spend about an hour killing fighters before I start getting a bit twitchy and head home to cash in. So less than an hour I can easily have 15k with a bog standard Sidewinder with two pulse lasers. With an Eagle with pulse lasers/railgun combo I can rack up way more than that in less time too. Apparently the quickest way to money is to just try to get a Hauler and then start on the trading runs. Two hours play is enough to get a Viper apparently...

Also being taken out by gankers suggests you're giving them a chance to get you. How do you fly away from the station? Are you in Anarchy zones? (Freeport for example?)

I feel your pain Allen, the other night I got rammed 5 or 6 times in a row...

Firstly its still in beta I doubt the AI is finalised yet.

A useful tool for Trading is http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/ it will allow you to maximise your trading revenue. It also has a insurance calculator that calculates how much it will cost to replace your ship. I am now leaving at least a buffer of twice the insurance cost.

Are you using KeyboardDemon's private group? This allows us to play together while being free of gankers...
