If you have enough money, then yes it is.

Otherwise, you get a certain amount loaned to you, which you pay back via a percentage of every earning until the amount is covered.
However, depending on your level, this may not be enough to buy back the complete ship. I'm Dangerous, for example, and can get up to 5mil on loan... That covers a suped-up Type-9, but won't stretch to a fully kitted Battle-Anaconda, for example.

    Yeah, Pythons suck now...
I think the Fer de Lance is supposed to be the best Gunship style vessel these days, but I can't afford one to try out.

That's somewhat unbalanced, IMO, especially as you (I assume) can't even scan them to see what special Horizons tech they might have, or anything.

They do have to face Horizons level NPCs, using engineering mods that those players can't install themselves. It's really not on, IMHO, to almost force players to buy and expansion to keep the game at the same difficulty it was before. To counter that though, you can still avoid NPCs fairly well without Horizons, so you can continue to play, just in a more limited fashion (and when the aliens arrive even deep space exploration might be problematic).

They did tone down NPCs a bit since they first received engineering mods though.

So, as someone who really can't be bothered to grind engineering mods and just want to fly around occasionally, how is the game looking these days?

I don't mind Elite being dangerous, there was a hint in the name about that, but random unavoidable deaths when the engineers patch came out means I haven't really played since.

It's looking curtailed, but still fun if you don't mind giving up a bit more freedom in how you play it. The random unavoidable deaths have been mitigated and are rarer, but certain play styles are no longer viable.

That's part of my worry. I have a trading Anaconda that used to be able to fend NPCs off quite happily, but AIUI my nearly elite combat rank means it will get hit quite hard if attacked even though that ranking was built up on other vessels.

So now every ship has to be a combat ship? Well on a 'conda that reduces cargo space from a bigger shield and makes jumps worse from heavier weapons, but where does it leave T7 and T9, are they now unusable?

(The few times I have played recently I have stayed purely combat).

As far as I can tell it's a bit of a catch-22 - you need to be in a combat ship but then the more pirates you defeat the higher your combat ranking and the harder it gets! I have a relatively well armed Asp X and at 'mostly harmless' rank I have to bug out of about 50% of combats from interdictions.

You can request a combat rank reset from support apparently. Something I may have to take advantage of repeatedly if things get too hard (I'm just about to rank up ) Otherwise I would have guessed it's possible to compromise the conda build a little in order to hold off pirates until security shows up, while not going full combat.

Regarding the T7 and 9.. I guess so. Certainly there's no point in lower grade modules any more - it seems you have to go optimum and build for speed/survivability from the start, which is a shame.

I'm just doing a bit more tuning before I head back into the stars and away from these troubles

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Reading between the lines for the next update, I think they're finally going to be making system security more of a thing. You will be able to set your nav computer to only route through high security systems.

The flip side of that is, I suspect that running defenceless trade ships through low security systems will result in your untimely demise.

Trade has been too easy (in terms of combat), there is no way we should be able to move through the backwaters of the galaxy without shields. It was never like that in the original Elite, if you had to go through anarchy systems then you knew you'd have a hard fight on your hands. Either plot around or power up your shields.

All that said, I hope this doesn't get dumped onto us too quickly, I'm currently out exploring without shields, I'm slightly scared I'll get rinsed on my way back.

Not a combat ship, no... just defensible.
Freighters have always been pish-easy targets in games like this - High mass, low manoeuvrability, low acceleration. The trick is usually the biggest shield possible, powered by the biggest power plant possible and peppered with auto-turrets. The aim is to merely fend off pirates and keep them distant while you escape. The moment you turn to fight, you are DEAD.

What Elite needs to do is allow these massive ships to fit bigger powerplants and shields.
I had the absolute best of both fitted to my Type-9, along with boosters and cell banks in every feasible slot. Two rapid fire hits from a lone NPC Fed Assault Ship dropped my shields to nothing before I could even hit the button to use the cell banks - No shields, no cells. I was still spinning from the interdiction when the hits came in.
A few more hits and my hull was gone. Absolutely no chance to even get a response going, there.

There's no way you should leave spacedock without one, if for no other reason than protection against some arrogant little Vulture pilot who comes speeding in through the dock and slams into your ship faster than you can evade.

True, but in the original Elite you couldn't buy a T9.

Reduction in profitability from having most of my hold taken up with shields and cells seems unlikely. In reality, you would go for a fighter escort. You would expect to be more likely to get attacked with a hold full of expensive goods, at which point hiring mercenaries should be cheaper and safer than fitting massive shields.

As things stand, I would have to convince my son to play the game and bribe him with extra mobile data allowance if he acts as a fighter wing for my trade missions At that point it ceases to be a game, things are getting too complex.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Well if you have horizons you'll be able to take your own fighter in a T9 in the next release. Controlled remotely be either you or AI (with the other manning the other ship).

I'm not sure if this will come out of cargo hold capacity or not, as the ships that will support fighters already have the bays on them, just currently unusable.

Well funny you should mention fighters... 'drone' controlled ones are coming in 2.2. Not sure a type 7 would get them, type 9 might though.

Doesn't matter - Type-9s will often suffer hull damage merely from landing too fast... which is pretty much any speed anyway. T9 shields are essential!

Good luck finding one, at least until you can hire NPC escorts... That was always a problem with things like Freelancer - No-one around interested in being an escort.

You'd expect that... but NPCs will attack any ship with any cargo. I'd also expect hired mercs will cost more than a one-off shield purchase once the runs start building up.

Planetary Landing hangars take up cargo slots - I don't see why this would be different.
Risk vs Reward, remember... or in this case Safety vs Profit.

Exactly. "Look at all that juicy cargo" says the Eagle with 2T of hold space trying to shoot up my Anaconda. Doesn't make any sense, but the thing is trying to make the game in any way accurate I think will just ruin it with needless complexity. If there is one thing I really don't want of an evening, it is complexity as that is something I get paid to deal with

I wasn't thinking of the one off shield purchase, which is peanuts. I was worried about loss of say 100T of cargo hold, a reduction by a quarter of the profits from every single trip.

To you, perhaps not... but to Mr Eagle who has absolutely zero cargo, 105 parking tickets from 42 Sector, an ex-wife who hasn't gotten a cheque from him in three months and an administrator of the housing unit where he's two months behind on his rent giving him five days to pay it off or he's out on the street... ANY cargo will do and if he can get it off you for free, all the better.

You might be flyin' a cargo plane full o' rubber dog poo outta Hong Kong... but if 523 units are such and the remaining 2 are, say, precious gems, then Mr Eagle might get to eat this month!

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Well I decided I'd make the dash for the Jacques trade CG. Just over a week to travel 22,000 lyrs.. with as much cargo as I can cram in.. should be interesting!

I think I can safely manage a jump a minute (including honking/DSS of primary star.. because I'm still an explorer and old habits die hard). With a loaded jump range of about 36lyrs, some accounting for the fact it's more like zig-zagging than travelling in a straight line, I reckon I can travel roughly 2000lyrs an hour. Do I have 11 hours to play this week? I'll find out!

Kalniel, have you upgraded your jump drive with Felicity @ Farseer station in Deciat?
