Thrustmaster as well, although I was using the keyboard and mouse before and think a very enjoyable experience can be had with that without feeling you're severely limited.

I'm rocking the Saitek X52 Pro, and loving it.
I've just got all the bits I need to mount it to my chair like this, so now I just need a comfy new office chair with the requisite arm geometry!
So, can anyone recommend a good chair?
I used to work with someone who in his youth built a space ship cabin out of wood with a BBC micro embedded in it to play the original Elite. These days with cheapish 24" LCD panels available that would be easier to do now. A cheap car bucket seat off ebay in a plywood cockpit. Can Elite do multi monitor? Side monitors for all round vision would be superb
Well I've been looking at the HOTAS setups but over £100 for a set seems just a little too steep, especially as I want to replace my 5850 fairly soon as I have 3 screens to drive.
HOTASes are primarily aimed at fairly hardcore Flight Sim enthusiasts, as there haven't been many other games geared toward such things recently. However, the market will probably change to accomodate this, with the releases of SC, ED and so on.
That said, they will still be pretty expensive as you effectively have 2 sticks easily at £50 a-piece, both of which need to be of pretty decent quality.
Quality costs, so even the cheaper X52 and X55 models have flaws.
^ Likewise.
Hugz!!!
But yeah, when I say HOTAS, I do mean the twin units with so many buttons that you never need to touch the keyboard during game play.
My stick is *technically* a HOTAS too, but needs more buttons... and even then, I've still mapped a string of functions to my G-Keys on the G19.
So... weapons. Little bit (!) of imbalance at the moment with cannons. Frankly, there's no point using anything else right now, there's just no downsides to them from what I can see. There's talk of reducing the ammo count down to about 50, but even so that's still going to be ridiculous and won't stop me from using them.
Yes, they have little use above 1km due to the speed of the projectile, but does anyone really dogfight beyond 1km? I had 4x C2 cannons on my Viper and could pretty much ruin fully shielded Cobra's in three to four hits, sometimes less if every round in a salvo hits. I've just bought two C4 cannons now, so will be interesting to see how mentally overpowered it is. You don't need to run any extra pips in the weapons to manage heat, just all to shields leaving one in engine and weapons and then just use the Vipers pace to dictate the range via boom and zoom. Rail guns are a waste of time due to the heat build up. Lasers take a while to kill and the heat can be an issue.. so err, cannons it is. What is everyone else running these days?
Dunno if you'd call it dogfighting, as such, but I will fire from the instant my weapons no longer say "Out Of Range". That's teh only wayI get ANY hits in, generally!!
Sidewinder with standard Pulse lasers, or whatever it is you get loaned when you restart.
Recently I bought a Hauler, so whichever single laser that comes with... You can tell I've really read up on my game, can't you!!
I'll see about taking a video with the new cannon load out and you'll see what I mean...
Standard lasers are pulse lasers. If you've got a Hauler, put it in Solo mode and head to the Anarchy zones and just go investigate every USS that you see. More often than not you'll come across a heap of gold. Just watch the scanner because NPC pirates will sometimes jump in and blow you to bits. As soon as you see anything on the scanner that isn't white, Flight Assist off and hit the boost button. Get into super cruise ASAP and then carry on as you were. Once you've got a fair few units of gold, head to Freeport, dock and then sell it on the black market. You'll get about 45k for every 10 units you sell. Scavenging with a Hauler is nice and profitable at the moment, but I wouldn't do it in anything other than Solo mode, because you run the risk of being shot to bits by players otherwise. Also note that carrying picked up dropped cargo is punishable by death, so don't go flying off into any other systems, with Freeport being an Anarchy system no-one really cares.
I did the Gold thing a few times in the Sidey, which is how I can afford a Hauler now.
I do need to read up on ship/weap stats though and figure out what I want.
Can't wait until we can have multiple characters and/or choose which ship we fancy flying today...!!
