Yup, my CMDR name is with a zero, O was taken. ;)
Wont allow me to have my usual name as is includes a rank abreviation which is forbidden :(
I need to have another bash at this, finally bought the beta loaded it up once (looks good on 3 monitors btw) and tried the first tutorial but didnt get very far on keyboard and mouse. Need to get the joystick out and find a good profile before im going to make much progress i feel.
Makes your own profile, half the battle in getting to grips with Elite is knowing instinctively where the right control for the situation is.
IMPERIAL SHIPS AVAILABLE IN BETA 3 omg omg omg
One of the many things they have done well is have a good controller / profile setup system. I downloaded a profile for the X45, but have started editing it already, also editable as a text file.
Finally getting somewhere now. Have upgraded my Viper systems so that they're broadly the same but weighing far less. Combined with a bigger power supply and FSD I can keep my temps down and still maintain the speed and nimbleness you associate with the Viper. I ran quad cannon (C1) for a couple of nights but find that whilst it rips the bigger ships apart, you become quite vulnerable to stuff like Eagles because you run out of ammo!
Overcharged Multicannons x4. Ho ho ho, smashes just about anything apart and you get a bit more ammo. Bit tricky to find but well worth hunting out. Mixing with normal Cannon isn't quite so good, you end up with two aiming points unless the target is straight and level, which frankly during a dogfight is pretty rare.
Had a couple of good dogfights last night, an Anaconda gave me a bit of a tickle down to 60% Hull and I got him down to about 40% before realising my thrusters were on the limit of expiry so I let him off. A Cobra with twin rails gave me a similarly severe kicking as well in a single shot - lesson learned, don't play head-on chicken with them haha!
Can't wait until Thursday when internet in my new flat goes live (fingers crossed). I haven't tried playing this on 4G as I'm guessing it will be unplayable with a lacklustre ping. Quite amazed how much I miss being able to jump in when I want.
I meant to post this earlier though, has anyone else noticed that with the new missions on the bulletin board it's a lot easier to make money early on with just a Sidewinder? I didn't play for that long before I moved and stopped playing, maybe a couple of hours, and was able to make well over 100k easily. Just troll the BB looking for jobs all to the same system, most don't even need cargo space! I think I had 4 missions to the same system once earning ~20k in 2 jumps. I'm not complaining mind you, I just hope it's intended as it makes the start, and any losses, a little less harsh.
Also, has anyone else noticed that when you travel within the same system, you undock, aim towards the next station, hit supercruise and it takes absolutely forever to get up to a decent speed? I am sure this didn't used to take as long before BETA 2. I'm talking ~2 mins just to hit 1c! Compare this to when you land after a hyperjump, you hit 1c in a few seconds. I understand it may well be to limitations or new physics calculations or something, but given the distance I have seen some stations to be from each other (10's of thousands of light seconds), it makes inter-system travelling very slow and tedious. Is it just me?
Making money via missions was the point of this beta. Trading was practically killed off to see how well people would progress by pretty much doing missions/hunting alone. The data they collect from this beta will show how much money they need to offer per mission to make it roughly the same as the trading.
If it's taking too long to reach speed in super cruise, it's because your err, not doing it right. ;)
It means you're stuck in a gravity well - caused by being close to a planet or other astronomical object. It disrupts the way the FSD works, and so stops you from gaining speed. The trick is to look at where the nearest large object (planet etc) is, and then put it directly behind you using the radar, regardless if this is in the direction that you require. You'll notice that you rapidly (!) accelerate into 1c and above - once you pick up sufficient pace turn toward your destination and since you're already moving quickly the journey time will be rapidly cut down.
Ooh, never thought of that. Will check it out next time I play (hopefully Thursday!).
It's the game I am pretending to play every time I fire up the NES emulator on my new android gaming tablet and run a couple more trading jumps :D Up to Above Average on the NES already - my best showing in original Elite ever :) But the more I listen to you guys talking about it, the less I can wait for this to finally get launched....
Next time I go bounty hunting I'll record it and tempt you further. ;)
I've decided to explore the current area and I'm going make my way across to the unknown end of the play area. Even with 'just' 500 systems there's tons to discover. I jumped to my first unexplored system the other day, cue comms system popping up with tons of "discovered" messages. Not sure if that means I'm the first human player to visit there? Either way it gave it a sense of excitement :)
It means it's unknown to you. If you then lock up an unknown object via the left panel and put it in the middle of your HUD, you'll hear your scanners kick in and they'll work out what the object is etc. Next time you're at a different station go to Universal Cartographic and you can sell the data you've acquired.
I'm getting this... ! Be downloading it tonight.
How easy is it using the more traditional method? Keyboard & Mouse?
