I'm enjoying it if you've not noticed. There's plenty of videos about and perhaps look on Twitch to see someone actually playing it. Might give you an idea of what it's actually like so far.

Having read through this thread i thought it was time i gave this a go. But it won't load.
I've opened a support ticket but i've often found these things can often be solved quicker by tapping into those with experience with the game. ;-)
Basically i was trying to get into the first tutorial, i got the loading screen with the ship that's rotating round and around. And it didn't get any further.
After a few attempts at doing that, i tried to play the game offline solo or somthing similar. Same again. Loading screen appears with the ship rotating and it doesn't go any further.
I've seen a few similar issues reported in the tech support forum they have but no answers there yet.
There were a number of issues of the spinning spaceships on earlier builds, but as far as I know was fixed around Beta2. Possibly worth a re-download?

Yeah all good now :-)
Very steep learning curve. Never played the Elite games so completly new to this, and it's not really helped by the fact that the tutorials for navigating etc don't actually tell you how.
The first tutorial where you take off fly out and return even was tough. My throttle on the flight stick is only a small one behind the stick, and i can't really judge where the middle is (important as it seems middle is no throttle, as it's half foward and half reverse) , so everytime i launch my throttle wasn't quite at 0 and involved some crashes. Then it doesn't tell you how to request entry back into the station... Then there's navigating the systems??? MY god. I think i'm gonna have a look for some guides tomorrow.
Very steep learning curve..
If you're coming to ED fresh from any kind of Elite game then yes - there's going to be some learning ahead.
That said, ask away - we don't bite.

Andy: it is indeed a steep learning curve (and it's certainly not for everyone) but there's a handy thread for new Commanders here. I've also found this guy's videos quite useful.

Thanks guys, I've read through the first guide there. I'm gonna give the other tutorials a go again.
But there's one question i have for you, as i'm on a single screen with no Occulus. I've locked the hat switch buttons to look left, right and forward is to look up. But they don't seem to work. They are working like the arrow buttons and moving power between the systems. Is this a beta bug or is there a way to lock controls to looking left/right and up?
Keybinds are... a bind at present. I spent about 2 hours getting my joystick (Black Widow, nothing too fancy) setup how I liked and while I've been trying to avoid playing too much to prevent ruining the game for myself it's well worth it.
I actually find that using the mouse to look around is a pretty good fit for me: I want to redistribute power a lot more often than I need to look around the cockpit (or at least I will until the Rift releases and I fail to resist...)
What joystick are you using? Maybe there's a bug I've not experienced in my limited testing.
EDIT: if you look into %installdir%\Frontier_Developments\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1001\ControlSchemes you'll find a number of .binds files. Pick out the one that you're using (dependent on which preset you used and then customised) and have a look through it in Notepad or something similar - you should see something about whichever buttons you have mapped in the headlook section.
I'm using a Logitech force 3D Pro. I'll have a look see if i can sort it. It was suggested in the guide to bind the thrust directions to the hat for combat. I may end up with that. I've always found looking up helpfull in dogfighting though so i might just lock that to a button.
Ziemann on the forum has some .bind files that he uses for your stick: grab his latest bindings file from https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showth...l=1#post922872 and make your tweaks once in game - he's still using mouse to look around, but it's a good start.
I think you have to unlock the view first, try mouse button 2, then try looking around with the hat switch. I ended up installing
http://www.burri-web.org/cassini/SCJMapper.html
to tell me which button was active, mainly because I grabbed somebody else's joystick profile (X45).
I use the same stick Andy. I use the hat as lateral thrusters and use FacetrackNoIR to look around the cockpit.
There will be a Free Look command in the controls settings somewhere. You get to set it to hold or toggle. Press this and it enables/disables the Free Look.
For example, I have a FLY5 with a single 8-way hat (it's more like a nipple, but hey. Same idea).
Normally that controls my strafing, but I assigned Button 5 to toggle Free Look on/off. I hit Button 5 and now the nipple controls which way I look. Hit Button 5 again and it centres my view, with the nipple going back to strafing control.
In menus, such as the left/right UI panel or the Station Menu, it instead controls the menu selection. It's context dependent as well as configureable to whatever you prefer.
Much of this was set up as the default mapping for my particular stick, which shows just how well thought-out the ED control scheme was!
I've managed to get the controls working, although i'm not sure i'll keep view locked anyway now.
Other control issues i had were largely user error.... Pressing one button when the command had been assiagned to another.
I've done a few transpot jobs but i'd like to give a bit of combat a go. If anyones got any advice on where to go for a bit of easy combat to dip my toe in it would be apreciated :-)
Best way is to hang around Resource Extraction Zones, Conflict Areas (Galnet tells you if there's any in the system you're currently in) and also there's the Nav Beacons and USS (Unidetentified Signal Sources you come across in supercruise. Plenty of opportunties, just be aware that if you're only just starting out your ship is more than likely not up to the job. A Minnow shouldn't go looking to pick a fight with a Shark.
