That's awesome, I gave up on missions, I tried to do a few of the low paying missions where I was supposed to fly out to one of three systems and shoot three pirates. I went to the first system flew around from USS to USS and other areas and then went on to the second system and then the third. When my 3 hours to complete the mission ran out I had only found 1 pirate. I guess it didn't help that I started the game in an unpopulated part of the galaxy, I might fly out to somewhere where there is a higher population and see if that makes a difference for me.

I got my thrust master hotas x the other day and it has now become even better to play. Took a while to get used to it but much more fun. Combat is more challenging and docking can be scary too.

    Elite : Dangerous

I had a play today and thought I'd 'upgrade' my ship, turned out all of my plans backfired as I ended up with a 3.6ly jump range. I really need to understand the class and rating system better, but for those of you that haven't cracked this yet, a basic rule of thumb is class the higher the number the better and rating the lower the letter the better.

I swapped an E4 Frame Shift Drive for a C3, doh... Not worry though, I have managed to find a place where I could buy a D4 so back to my merry life of confusion. lol.

Thanks to erudito87 and MaddAussie for not laughing at my misfortune for too long and the help they and MaddAussie's friend gave me on Team Speak.

    *** edit ***

I have now completed a rare trade run and upgraded my thrusters to C4.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Managed to get a few hours in last night. Finished my sightseeing at Sol and so decided to head towards the Empire in order to rank up with them. Along the way I came across a system called Marici. Oh my days it's a lot of fun - decent Occulus station with plenty of upgrades right next to a heavy ice ring that's ram packed with 15k upwards wanted ships. Since it's Federation space there's plenty of police ships tearing things up, meaning it's easy to steal the final hit and clean up. Made about 100k in 20 mins in bog standard Eagle which was a bonus, made it fairly easy to get some upgrades on the go. I can see myself staying here for a while!

Class is size-related, pretty much. You can fit a Class 2 thing in a Class 3 slot, but not t'other way around. If you can afford it, get the highest class available.
High class = Bigger punch, generally.

Rating is more about performance. An F-rated thing might use 6.5w of power, while an A-rated one might use only 3.2w, or have a longer range, faster reload or somesuch.

You can compare an item in the shop with the one you currently have installed and the panel on the right shows how your ship will be affected if you install the shop item (red = worse, blue = better).

To increase your jump range, you'll want a better FSD (Frame Shift Drive). You'll probably want a better power unit too, so your ship doesn't overheat while the FSD is charging!

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Another thing to note. D rated items are the low mass versions. They may not be the most powerful but they keep your ship mass down and so if you're trying to keep manoeuvrability high they make a big difference. I'm running lots of D rated kit at the moment in an Eagle and nothing out turns me.

But there comes a time when you need bigger guns for faster kills, if only to stop the buggers from jumping out on you!!

Also bigger ships with higher mass will mass-lock your target for longer!

Well, I decided to take the plunge. Hopefully work has quietened down for a couple of months, so might have time to play this. That and I realised that my usual tactic of waiting for it to be in a sale probably won't work!

Now to spend the day at work trying to descretely read up on stuff before dusting off the X-52.

There is a link to a ship outfitter website in the useful info thread. I found it useful to play around with that before purchasing anything to see what effect on the ships stats were going to be before working up the cash to buy them.

My misses found somewhere packing a plasma accelerator cannon for sale at a station (high tech independent system) and holy cow the damage is high if you get a hit. Makes we want one or two ....
